I have to say, I was a total negative nancy yesterday morning. Sure, the morning was pretty terrible as we saw a good bit of underdeveloped snow, but the afternoon saw a return of sunshine (finally!) and things actually looked pretty good at the ski areas. My office doesn’t have a window and so when I walked out to my car for lunch, I was pleasantly surprised. I kind of felt like an idiot for talking about how bad of a day it was going to be to ski or snowboard, when in actuality the afternoon and night sessions looked to be pretty fun.

It appears that the underdeveloped snow didn’t deteriorate conditions too much. The cams this morning are looking pretty good. There are a few locations that are showing thinning coverage this morning, but that is mainly confined to the southern portion of the region where the heaviest precip was seen. Everyone else is looking pretty good. .jpg)

Ober is showing a few bare spots this morning as well…it should still be a fun day up there though!
Only Cataloochee and Beech are showing a drop in trail counts this morning. Cataloochee is down 2 and now sits at 14 open trails. Beech only lost Crossover, which isn’t even a trail in my opinion anyways. Heck, somehow Timberline actually added two trails! That puts them at 30 now. In general, everyone is showing a drop in base depth of only a few inches. Not too bad.

Temperatures this morning are fairly chilly, with most places seeing readings in the low to mid 30’s. Today is going to be pretty nice as we’re going to see a good dose of sunshine at most locations. It will be MUCH welcomed after this past weekend. While the weather is going to be sunny for the majority of ski areas, high temps will vary significantly depending on where you are. Here are the NWS forecasts for Cataloochee, Massanutten, and Snowshoe.
CATALOOCHEE
Today: Sunny, with a high near 50. Northwest wind between 6 and 9 mph.
Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 34. Northwest wind between 4 and 7 mph becoming calm.
Wednesday: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 52. Southwest wind between 3 and 6 mph.
MASSANUTTEN
Today: Mostly sunny, with a high near 53. West wind between 6 and 10 mph.
Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 29. West wind around 6 mph becoming calm.
Wednesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 47. Calm wind becoming south around 6 mph.
SNOWSHOE
Today: Partly sunny, with a high near 35. Breezy, with a west wind between 16 and 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph.
Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 26. Northwest wind between 9 and 15 mph.
Wednesday: Increasing clouds, with a high near 40. West wind between 5 and 8 mph.
As you can see, temps will be noticeably colder in the northern portions of the region. Snowshoe, Canaan, Timberline, and Wisp will all probably be able to make snow tonight. Once again, those guys get the luck of the draw!
Regardless, today and tomorrow should feature some pretty good conditions. I don’t want to call it spring-like because I don’t think we’re at that point yet. I’m curious to see how the snow is holding up when I ride at Beech or App tonight. I will definitely let you guys know tomorrow morning.
I didn’t mention the weather for Thursday, because it looks wet again unfortunately. The good news is that colder weather return for the weekend. I’ll talk more about that later this week…

Before I go I would also like to give a quick update on summits. A lot of people on the messageboard have been asking about them. February 4th is still the date for the SkiNC Summit at Beech Mountain Resort. Lift tickets will be discounted to $40. In the next few days we’ll try and get a page up with more info and I’ll get our design guy to make a printable coupon. Honestly, this Summit isn’t going to be a huge event as it’ll mostly be just a get together. It will still be fun though and I’m sure we’ll have a big turnout!
The big event that we’re trying to plan out is the Ski Southeast Summit at Snowshoe Mountain on March 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. I’m still in talks with Mark Glickmann about everything and I’m hoping to have that stuff ironed out this week. Mark has assured me that the 25% off lodging is definitely a go though. Mike is pretty stoked about this event and I think he’s got some good plans and ideas to make it better than ever. Look for more info on that as well and mark your calendars!
