What a Crazy, Busy, Great Saturday it Was

Sunday Morning Edit:

I’ll post some vids of our Sunday morning First Tracks but suffice to say that it was epic. I’m fairly certain we had our largest group of “first trackers” with perhaps 50+/- of us that were allowed to ski and ride early and often for 40 minutes or so before the public was allowed on the mountain. Thanks to Snowshoe’s Mountain Ops for making that happen.

We were allowed to hit up Widow Maker, Camp 99 and the Flume runs. To be honest, after a full day from 9am until 3:30pm skiing on Saturday…those First Tracks runs this morning were all I needed to wrap up another successful Summit weekend.

We’re headed back to the High Country momentarily and I’ll try to post a bunch of vids and photos later this evening. Until then…

Saturday was one of those bluebird days to be on the mountain. The crowd here at Snowshoe was raving about the weather, the conditions on the slopes, the snow-farming staff here on the mountain, the food, the fun…and about anything else you could think of. It’s safe to say that this well-timed cold snap had everyone in an awesome mood.

I and a bunch of friends (how many is to be determined) are heading out for First Tracks this morning, so I’ll report back later.

Here’s some news from around the region.

Appalachian Ski Mtn. is excited to be operating with a majority of slopes and peak season conditions over the entire mountain! Upper Big Appal, Appal Jam, Candied Appal, Orchard Run and Strudel are now open again! Their snow report isn’t reflecting that, but we think that gives App seven or eight trails open and the main thing to know is that they are open to the top and with great conditions after two straight nights of being able to create a blizzard of snowmaking on their mountain. For the comfort of our guests, there will be no snowmaking on open slopes from 11am – close.
Bryce Resort is also making snow this morning! They are open for day sessions with a base of 38″ and five trails.
Canaan Valley did not make snow but they are primed and ready for their last day of the 2017-2018 season with six trails open for your pleasure. They also have a terrain park open for today. There was some talk about reopening next weekend, but according to their website today is the final day for skiing and snowboarding at Canaan.
Cataloochee Ski Area is open for day sessions today and report, “Did you know today marks 100 days of skiing and riding for us this season? Pretty cool! And at 22 degrees and snowmaking round the clock since early Friday morning, we think its going to be a great day to ski today. We are offering weekday rates on weekends now through the rest of the season. And today snowmaking will continue throughout the day as long as we have temperature. Colder temps are in the upcoming forecast again tonight and we will continue snowmaking and no, we are not sure if we will be going back up to regain terrain above at this point in time, given the warmth of the ground and total loss of snow there. We are looking at the weather day to day and evaluating as we go. But this season, we skied to the top of the mountain and most all trails more than 75% of the season.”
Massanutten Resort – had suspended ops but they are making snow and reported, “Yee Ha! Despite the high winds, snowmaking was more productive than anticipated last night. The Ski Slopes will reopen for daily 9 am – 5 pm operation starting Sunday, March 4th with limited coverage and limited terrain available (no intermediate slopes). Late Season Rates are in effect. Slope operations will continue on a day to day basis, so please check our Snow Conditions page or call 540.289.4954 for current information. Snow Tubing is closed for the season.”
Snowshoe Mountain – they are open with 43 slopes and trails and have made a ton of snow over the last three days. Conditions were really amazing on Saturday and I can only imagine them to be better for Sunday fun on the slopes. Snowshoe gave us a shout out this morning with this post, “Nor’Easters have always been generous to us here at 4,848ft. and this last one was no exception. Our snowmakers have been in high gear as well, so conditions are really fantastic out there. The Mountaineer Parks Crew has a full build in Evolution for all of your jibbing and jumping needs. Widowmaker will be closed until around 11AM for race training. Snowmaking will be in progress on some open terrain. We would like to extend a special welcome to all of our friends visiting us this weekend for the SkiSoutheast Summit!”

130+ fellow, snow-loving peeps are here on the mountain with us and to be honest the traffic on the slopes yesterday looked more like a Holiday weekend than something in early March. Let’s just say that Snowshoe’s marketing peeps are smiling right now. Quite the crowd.
Sugar Mountain is down a trail today but open for day and night sessions and making snow this morning. They will play on seven trails today.
Timberline Resort is open to their mid-station with 5 trails for Sunday sessions.
Wintergreen Resort is continuing to host the SARA U14 Championships on Sunday. As a result, The Highlands will have a delayed opening of noon on both days. Spectators are welcome – come and cheer the racers! Spectators can gain access on foot near the Highlands entrance and Checkerberry Cabin, or by walking up Cross Cut trail. The course can also be viewed from the overlook off Highlands Leisure Trail. They have 8 trails open for Sunday sessions.
Winterplace Resort is open today with seven trails and really nice conditions. According to their website they are making a decision about extending the season later today.
Wisp Resort is open for day sessions with ten slopes this morning.
