The Cold & Snowy Trend Continues at the Ski Resorts

1-2″ of natural snow fell at numerous ski areas over the last 24 hours. Wolf Ridge and Cataloochee both picked up about 2″ of new snow, as did Snowshoe, Canaan, Timberline and Winterplace. Beech & Sugar picked up another 1″ and every resort cranked up the snowguns to sweeten their conditions overnight with the lone exception of Canaan Valley which interesting elected not to make snow this weekend since they have so much and they have announced that they will begin making snow again Monday.

I think that is a testament to how good things are across the region. Base depths are up across the region as the temps dropped into the single digits at nearly every mountaintop and those kinds of temperatures allows our snowmaking crews to make the kind of fine powder that will make Sunday skiing and snowboarding pretty awesome – wherever you choose to ski or ride today.

Conditions are really sweet at every ski area for this busy, MLK weekend and there’s plenty of great terrain open at every ski area. However, I’m a little surprised that only Bryce Resort, Cataloochee, Ober Gatlinburg, and Snowshoe Mountain are 100% open with every possible trail available. Okay, Oglebay with their one slope and Sapphire with their two trails are also 100% open.

How about this cloud of snowmaking atop Snowshoe. Click to Enlarge.

Several are close to 100% including Appalachian with 11 of 12; Massanutten with 13 of 14; Winterplace with 26 of 27 and Wolf Ridge with 14 of 15 trails.

Beech Mountain is operating with 14 of 17, with only Meadows, Crossway and The Oz Run not open. Canaan Valley is operating with 26 of 47 trails open today; Sugar Mountain is playing on 18 of 21 with Boulderdash, the Terrain Park and Sugar Bear not open. The Homestead Resort is operating on 7 of 9 trails; Timberline with 22 of 36 trails; Wintergreen is operating with 16 of 24 and Wisp Resort is on 27 of 34 today.

Some Notables:

Canaan Valley Resort and Justin Harris have really stepped up their game this season by posting a ton of really good content. Check out Saturday’s update.

Cataloochee – As mentioned earlier, they picked up 1.5″ of snow but didn’t report it on their report. Tammy Brown did post, “We have made an incredible amount of snow and we will be coming off snowmaking during day skiing hours for all trails with the exception of Alley Cat, our race trail.”

Massanutten – They are looking great and posted, “The snowmaking team has resurfaced nearly everything and the skiing today is looking to be fantastic. Sunny with high temperatures in the lower 20’s. Limited day time snowmaking today. Tubing is SOLD OUT for today.”

Ober Gatlinburg – They are having their best winter in years and they have so much snow base right now that they will not be making snow while slopes are open.

A nice shot at Ober. Is that Paul Goodloe with the Weather Channel?

Oglebay – They had the coldest temperature that we witnessed this morning at MINUS 1°

I always love these basin shots of Snowshoe. Click to enlarge this one as it shows the top right side of the mountain in a cloud of snowmaking.

Snowshoe Mountain – They simply keep basking in the glory of more snow and awesome conditions. 4″ of snow has fallen atop their 4848′ elevations and Shawn posted, “The good times and good ski conditions continue to roll with more snow in the forecast for this week. It’s shaping up to be another fantastic Sunday Funday here on the mountain so get out there and enjoy! Snowmaking may be in progress on some open terrain. Widowmaker will be delayed for ski team practice. Timberjack and Mountaineer are open as ski trails without park features. Subaru Winterfest continues in the Village today! If you’re a big fan of hot cocoa, s’mores, live music, or free stuff, make sure to hit it up!”

Sweet conditions at Omni Homestead
Winterplace was showing off some nice snow!
