Appalachian Ski Mountain – It was 21° this morning and they made snow. Appalachian has closed a couple of trails to focus snowmaking efforts on them. Today they will offer 7 of 10 slopes including the Appal Jam Terrain Park. We expect Appal Jack, Thin Slice and Hard Core to reopen before the weekend. On another note, Appalachian has just received 6 new benches to be located in the Appal Jam and Appaljack Terrain Parks. The benches will allow riders to rest, watch, or adjust their equipment. Each bench is 6 feet long and made of aluminum checkerplate. "These benches appeared first in the parks at Whistler/Blackcomb in British Columbia," said Terrain Park Director Drew Stanley. "We feel that these benches will add to our park scene and continue our tradition of offering the latest features and amenities for our park riders.”

Cataloochee Ski Area – They are making HISTORY today! The first ski resort to open on the East Coast this season can now also boast that they are open today with the most terrain that they have ever offered as they are 100% today with 12 slopes and trails, including the Upper and Lower Snowbird Trails. Please Note that both Upper and Lower Snowbird Trails are open for day skiing only. Skiers and Riders ALWAYS like to hear about new terrain to play on. Today you have it!

Hawksnest Ski Resort – 20° this morning and they will have Packed Powder conditions on 9 trails + tubing. We’ve been hearing a lot of great reports about the between session grooming that Hawksnest re-implemented a season ago. Lenny and Duggin are getting rave reviews for laying down some nice corduroy for night session skiers! (Of course it’s nice for the morning session too!)

Sapphire Valley – Is closed Mondays and Tuesdays! They will be open for skiing and tubing on Wednesday at 5pm.

Scaly Mountain – The popular tubing park is open for the weekends again. We spoke with Gene Head over there yesterday and he said that did open for tubing this past weekend and will reopen for Friday tubing from 6pm-10pm; Saturdays from 10am-10pm and Sundays from 10am-6pm.

Ski Beech Resort – Today is TWO FOR TUESDAY at the highest ski resort in the Eastern United States! Beech has 10 trails open with Packed Powder and Frozen Granular conditions…and two of you can ski for the price of one for day session only. Robbins Run and The Oz Run are open and the word is that they are making snow to beat the band on Upper and Lower Southern Star and Upper and Lower White Lightning so look for them to open HOPEFULLY prior to the weekend. Expect great conditions at Ski Beech today!

Sugar Mountain Resort – They have added two more open trails to their available terrain for today. That means that you can ski and ride on 19 trails including their terrain park. Boulderdash & The Terrain Park are OPEN! Tubing is open as well.

Wolf Ridge Resort – Looked for groomed conditions on 12 trails today with a base of 22-52” The Breakaway side of the mountain is open on Friday & Saturday nights.

Uhmmm, Where Did The Snowy Forecast Get Off To?

For the last few days we have been relating what several local weather gurus and meteorologists have been forecasting – and that is snow every other day or so during the week. Now there seems to be a bit of division in what will happen. Some models seem to suggest more of an icy/sleet event on Thursday, while Meteorologist Marcus Lynch is forecasting (as of 10pm last night) a 70% chance of snow on Thursday and 50% chance of snow lingering into Friday.

Regardless of what the precip is, it will be COLD for the forecast period into next week. Highs in the 20s and 30s and lows in the teens and 20s. That means more snowmaking, and mid season conditions at YOUR favorite ski area. Get out and enjoy and if you have a trip planned for this weekend, you are in for a great time!

Until Next Time…

THINK COLD AND SNOW!!!
