Anticipating Winter’s Return on Saturday

On this gloomy morning, we are playing the waiting game as we wait for Old Man Winter to return. Fortunately, it won’t be long.

After a soggy (and warmish) Friday, winter will return on Saturday bringing snowmaking conditions and some natural snow to the mountains.

As one would expect, conditions on the slopes are wet after rain fell later yesterday and overnight across our coverage area.

This view from the summit of Beech Mountain never gets old.

Friday will find some more wet conditions as rain will continue off and on throughout the day and the rain could be heavy at times (boo!). Rain gear will be a must-have on the slopes today, but there will be “windows of opportunity” to get some dry runs in today.

For the latest conditions, be sure to check out the Snow Reports page. With the rain, be sure to be on the lookout for changing conditions today.

One notable is that Ober Gatlinburg has suspended skiing and snowboarding operations, but they hope to pick things up as soon as they can get a little more coverage on the slopes. It wouldn’t be far fetched to see them get cranked back up by early next week.

Saturday night is what we are most excited about.

By tomorrow evening, we will see snow falling and snowmaking cranked back up.

As the snow wraps up on Sunday, we could see 1-4” of natural stuff fall with the favored locations being on the higher end of that range.

Not the big snow that we are all wanting, but we will take it.

A soggy morning at Cataloochee but things still look really good.

The snowmaking window for most of the resorts is going to be pretty solid as we could see round the clock snowmaking for a few days once things get cranked up on Saturday.

Conditions on Sunday should be really, really sweet.

Looking ahead – there is also a chance of snow early next week so the slopes should be in great shape as we keep the new year rolling.

That will do it for today, but be sure to check us out on Facebook (facebook.com/SkiSoutheast/) and Instagram (instagram.com/skisoutheast/) for the latest.

If you aren’t following us on Facebook, you will want to be in the next week or so for some pretty cool giveaways – hint, hint.

Until next time, #ThinkSnow!
