Monday has arrived and with it a dramatic change to the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic skiing landscape. This past weekend saw the closings of Appalachian, Beech, Canaan Valley, and Ober Gatlingburg. Here’s a list by state of the resorts still in operation.
Maryland:
Wisp Resort: 36-60”
West Virginia:
Snowshoe Mountain: 34-46”
Timberline Resort: 35-49”
Winterplace Resort: 36-60”
Virginia:
Bryce Resort: 35-45”
Massanutten Resort: 36”
The Homestead: 50”
Wintergreen Resort: 24-48”
North Carolina:
Cataloochee Ski Area: 28-62”
Sugar Mountain: 18-70”
We expect all of these areas to be open at least through the weekend – with the exception of Bryce which is looking at Saturday, March 29 as their last day. I imagine that just how much snow we get this week will be a pretty big determining factor.
I was scrolling through the resort cams this morning and noticed that the quad at Beech remains void of chairs this morning.

We still have another week or so of skiing and riding, but things are definitely starting to wind down. Because we’re in the extended season, most of the resorts did not plan for events this time of year. Snowshoe on the other hand extended their season early enough to be able to put on their Last Hurrah Weekend as they take us out of the season on April 5-6.
As our minds start to drift towards summer, I invite you guys to head over to the summer site, onthemtn.com. It’s new and we still have a lot of work to do on it, but with your help we’ll get that up and running where we’ll continue to follow the resorts and their summer activities, like mountain biking. We’re also working on putting together a river section with water level feeds and happenings.
But, don’t let your minds wonder too far yet. There’s still time to get turns in and with the potential for snow this week, we could get in (dare I say!) a last powder day. The temperatures are MUCH colder this morning with sun before the storm moves in.
