Wisp Resort in McHenry, Maryland:

What They Say About Themselves!
Wisp Resort is no secret to many Mid-Atlantic skiers &
riders, as it is one of the longest-running operations in the
region.
Wisp Resort is Maryland’s only all-season ski and golf resort,
overlooking Deep Creek Lake from Marsh Mountain in the heart of
Garrett County, the state’s westernmost county. With more than
65 miles of shoreline, Deep Creek Lake is Maryland’s largest
inland lake. Wisp Resort is less than a three-hour drive from
the metropolitan areas of Washington, DC, and Baltimore, two
hours from Pittsburgh and a 45-minute drive from Morgantown,
West Virginia and Cumberland, Maryland. By implementing
state-of-the-art snowmaking technology and a cutting edge resort
management system, Wisp has raised the bar for resort
performance and efficiency.
Of the 32 slopes gracing Marsh Mountain, Possum Trail is the
longest at more than 1 mile, and Squirrel Cage (black diamond)
and The Face (black diamond) are the most popular. Although Wisp
is the perfect spot for beginning and intermediate skiers,
advanced skiers and boarders have plenty of challenges as well,
with a full third of the runs listed as advanced or higher. In
addition to the traditional-style slopes, Wisp also has a world
class terrain park, for thrill seekers looking to catch air or
play on the rails. Wisp Resort, which features a true
ski-in/ski-out hotel, also offers night skiing on 90 percent of
the mountain.

What's
New for 2008-2009!
Bear Claw Tubing Park – Wisp is adding a second conveyor
carpet lift to get you up the mountain faster, leaving more time
for sliding down 10 lanes of snow tubing.

Snow
Cats – The snow cat fleet is growing with the awesome
machines the Grooming Team test-drove last spring.

Wisp Resort
is adding two new Prinoth grooming machines to help produce a
pristine snow surface to start each day. Fresh corduroy anyone?
Editor's Note: We've watched from the Wisp Resort Hotel
while a fleet of groomers crested Squirrel Cage trail, so these
mentioned add to an already impressive fleet of groomers.
Chairlift #2 receives a Loading Carpet – Wisp will be among the
first in the mid-Atlantic to install a specially-designed
loading carpet at either Chair 2 or 3. The design and operation
of the loading carpet will raise the bar dramatically for the
“quality of the on-snow experience”, particularly for beginners.
As a novice, it can be intimidating to board a chairlift with
two long sticks on your feet. The loading carpet will ease the
lift loading experience allowing for more uphill capacity.
Skiers and riders simply step onto the carpet and stand still.
The carpet will run in perfect synchronization with the speed of
the chairlift and will deliver you to the chair so that you need
only sit down. Happy Skiers and Riders all around!
Mountain Coaster
For those who want an even more unusual experience, Wisp added a
Mountain Coaster to its repertoire of amenities in 2007 and open
year-round! A cross between an alpine slide and a rollercoaster,
the Mountain Coaster is only the fourth of its kind in the
country and the second on the east coast. The familiar “click,
click, click” of the rails as carts ascend a 1,300-foot long
track is sure to stir the butterflies in riders’ bellies.

Snowmaking – Wisp Resort has one of the largest and most energy
efficient snowmaking systems in the world! Although changes and
improvements may not be visible, be assured that Wisp Resort is
constantly working behind the scenes to evaluate each component
of our world-renown snowmaking system.
While other resorts look to the sky for snow, Wisp Resort’s
state-of-the-art snowmaking pumphouse can keep the resort’s 32
ski slopes covered with snow throughout the winter. Built in
2004 on top of Marsh Mountain, the $3 million system is one of
the world’s largest and most energy efficient, making Maryland’s
only four-season resort the ideal destination for skiers and
boarders. The airless snowmaking system is the perfect
complement to Mother Nature, which already produces an average
of 100 inches of snowfall in the area. Wisp’s computerized
weather and pumping stations is capable of producing 145
acre-feet of snow per day, enough to cover Wisp’s 32 trails with
more than a foot of snow in 24 hours.
