Winter Just Doesn’t Know When to Quit

First Trax

Stay up to date by getting notified of new posts!

I went back this morning to last year’s Frist Trax for today just to see how we are comparing.  We all remember the late season we had last year as well, so I wanted to see how we were stacking up.  Tonette wrote the post and shared with us that 11 of our member resorts were open.  Massanutten surprised by giving a bonus day of skiing after receiving 4” of snow.  Wintergreen had also decided to extend their season one final weekend, March 23 & 24.

Well, let me tell you that today we have 14 open resorts and just like last year Wintergreen is announcing ANOTHER extension to the season.  As we’ve mentioned here, Wintergreen rescheduled their spring events, which were supposed to happen this past weekend, to this coming weekend.  They have shared with us this morning that they will be open on Saturday March, 29th and Saturday April, 4th.  Sounds like they are pretty firm about April 4th, but I guess we shall see…

No signs of letting up at Wintergreen

Wintergreen is under a Winter Weather Advisory until noon today with freezing rain expected.  The same goes for Massanutten.  If you check out Massanutten’s Facebook page, you’ll notice that they have switched over to spring.  I guess it’s inevitable.

Cataloochee has shared their schedule for the remainder of the season with us as well.  Here it is straight from the Cat’s mouth, “Cataloochee is now on its late season schedule with skiing and riding Monday through Friday, 9am until 4:30pm and Saturdays and Sundays, 8:30am until 4:30pm. Our planned closing date is Sunday, March 30. Tube World located in Maggie Valley, across from Ghost Town in the Sky, four miles from the ski area is now closed for the 2013-14 tubing season.”

I came across a video this morning on weather.com talking about what has been different this winter.  It helps to explain the wonderful winter we've had down here.  You can check it out by clicking on the below.

Weather

There are a few alerts still out there – in addition to the ones I mentioned above.  Appalachian Ski Mountain is under a Winter Weather Advisory until noon today.  The main threat here is ice.  Beech and Sugar are also under a Winter Weather Advisory until 11 this morning with ice and freezing drizzle the main concern.  The Homestead in Virginia has a Winter Weather Advisory of their own until noon today with ice, again, being the culprit.  The Homestead is still going strong with 58” of snow on the ground and skiing today from 9:00-4:30.  Tubing is also still open at The Homestead.

Lots of snow at The Homestead

Be cautious as you head out today as black ice seems to be a theme at a good portion of the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic resorts. Otherwise you might see the lows 40’s, but with the humidity and wind I doubt it will feel that warm, and partly cloudy skies.

Get while the getting is good!  Take Care!
