Wild Weather. Snow, Cold and Now Spring Ahead???

Weather

What a WILD ride we’ve been on of late across the Southeast! Last week while some areas received snow others were experiencing Spring.  Then things got mild for a few days and then this past weekend the weather turned very cold and the resorts that wanted to made snow.  Saturday may have been one of the prettiest days to ski of the season! Sunday night delivered some more natural snows to West Virginia and into the Western North Carolina Mountains as Beech Mountain reported 1.5” of snow Sunday night.  Then last night many of the high elevations of the Southeast saw MORE SNOW.  Beech Mountain is reporting in with 2-3” of snow and Snowshoe in West Virginia is reporting 2” as well.  What’s NEXT!?!?

Here’s the breakdown by featured resorts in each state:

WISP RESORT IN MARYLAND – Sunny skies today and a high near 37°.  Tonight will be plenty cold enough to make snow at 19°.  Wednesday will be sunny with a mild up to 50°.  Thursday is looking cloudy with a very slight chance of light rain and 60°.  Friday may see a little more of a chance of light rain, but nothing to kill a whole day and a high of 60°.  Saturday is looking pretty with a high of 62°. Sunday may bring more spring-like showers and a mix of clouds and sun with a high of 56°. More of the same on Monday with a high near 56°.

SNOWSHOE MOUNTAIN IN WEST VIRGINIA – It should be sunny and cold today with a high near 32°.  Tonight’s low will be around 20°.  Wednesday will be sunny with a high near 42°.  Thursday should be breezy but clear with a high near 52°.  Friday is looking like a 50-50% chance of rain and a high near 52°.  Saturday should be variably cloudy with a high getting close to 60°. Sunday will cool a bit to 54° and Monday may be cloudy with light rain and a high near 52°.

MASSANUTTEN RESORT IN VIRGINIA – They should gorgeous today with sunny skies and a high near 40°. Tonight will be cold at 24°.  Wednesday should be sunny with a high near 50°. Thursday should be another pretty one with sun and temps nearing 60°.  Friday may be a little damp with a 40% chance of rain and a high of 60-62°.  Saturday should be beautiful with a high of 70°!!! Sunday and Monday will be more sunshine and highs a degree or two cooler in the 60s.

OBER GATLINBURG IN TENNESSEE – They are looking at their last week of skiing and they could not be timing things better.  Today should be sweet with highs around 53°.  Wednesday sunny and 64°. Thursday may be variably cloudy with a 20% chance of rain and 70°. Friday offers a 30% of light rain and 69°. Saturday more spring like variable clouds and a 30% chance of a thunderstorm and 74° for a high temp! Sunday and Monday more of the same with a high near 70°.

MOUNTAINS OF NC – The Mountains of North Carolina are in for a taste of weather that will resemble Late Spring or Early Summer for the foreseeable future.  That is the consensus from all of our weather sources.  The only thing that they seem to differ on only slightly is HOW BIG A TASTE.  Winter isn’t over yet, but the mild streak ahead MAY mean the premature end to ski season at some resorts.  You can check out how the weather ahead may dictate closures on the morning updates.

We all got another little burst of snow last night.  Yesterday morning, while most of the High Country saw only a very light dusting of snow Beech Mountain saw about 1.5”.  Last night the whole area got in on the act as most of the region saw anywhere from a moderate dusting to about an inch of snow.  Beech dominated with another 2-3” of new snow.

Snow flurries are still flying around this morning as I post this weather update, but they will stop shortly and give way to clearing skies.  It will be cloudy early and variably cloudy later in the day with a high of 44°.  Most of the resorts should be able to make snow tonight (if they choose to) as temps will nose down to 24°.  However that may be the last time in a while that they would be able to as temps will begin to soar with each passing day.

Wednesday should be sunny with a high of 54°.  Thursday will be sunny and 60°.  Friday will offer a slight chance of a shower but nothing to kill an entire day and the high is expected to get to 61°.  Saturday things heat up even more with sunny skies and a high around 65°.  Sunday should be Partly Cloudy and 63° and by Monday we could see a high near 70°.

There’s certainly some more cold air in the forecast for March…but will it be in time to prompt ski areas to stay open???  Stay tuned.

Until Next Time!
