Surprise, Surprise! Sapphire Valley opens for skiing today! Yesterday we wrote that Sapphire Valley was ready to open but thought that they would wait til next week to do so. Then BOOM…they are open for skiing today! The Holiday crowds pretty much make or break resorts and we’re glad to see them open!

Speaking of openings, Ski Beech has opened more terrain and with 12 slopes and trails operating they now have the most terrain open in North Carolina. Upper and Lower Southern Star and the popular Oz Run are the only trails not open right now.

We get a lot of you asking about tubing hills. Many want to know if resorts have any operating. Our ski report page shows the resorts that have tubing open. Additionally, you can also see terrain park openings, etc.

There was NO FIRE on the slopes at Sugar – We received a lot of email about how cool the Monday night shot of Sugar’s Big Red Slopes looked…as if on fire. One poor young soul actually emailed us questioning "Ya’ll doctored that photo, cause fire can’t stay going on snow!" No, Virginia, we did not doctor the photo, but please let me know which roads you travel because I want to stay clear!

More Resort News – Cataloochee is officially 90% open, however the only slope not open is the Snowbird Trail which is only open during natural snowfall. So let’s call them fully open with nine slopes and great conditions.

Hawksnest is skiing on eight slopes and has announced that Weather permitting, their new snow tubing park will be open on Thursday. Also if you are into a little entertainment with your snow skiing, Hawksnest provides live entertainment on weekends. They kick things off this weekend with Davis Tucker up in The Nest.

Appalachian Ski Mountain is the only ski area in North Carolina with their Terrain Park open. We’ll try to get you some updates as to what they have going this season. Guys — report in!
