Description
If your family loves to snowboard, ski, or snow tube, Black Bear Resort is the perfect, affordable “family place” to spend a week or weekend while in the Canaan Valley area. Black Bear is centered between two great West Virginia ski mountains just minutes from each other, two state parks, (including Blackwater Falls), a federal wildlife refuge and miles of national forest. Canaan Valley is the perfect area to explore in winter or in summer!
The Pedestal vacation homes and Black Bear Inn are family friendly, as is the entire Resort. (Some units are pet friendly!) There’s a Main Lodge with WiFi, a playground, and a pond. Of course, if there’s lots of snow, the grounds have plenty of places to sled or just walk. Overall, families make Black Bear their “home-away-from home” while they explore the recreational offerings within Canaan Valley.
Nearby there’s horseback riding at Mountain Trail Rides, a sled run at Blackwater Falls State Park, an ice skating rink at Canaan Valley Resort State Park. White Grass Ski Touring, Blackwater Falls, and Canaan Valley Resort offer cross-country ski trails and ski rentals. Special wintertime events are always on the agenda.
Directions
From Baltimore and Washington DC- From I-270 take I-70W to Hancock, MD, take I-68W to Cumberland, MD. At Cumberland take 220S through Keyser, WV until it intersects with Rt. 50W at New Creek. Stay on Rt. 50W only a short distance until it junctions with Rt. 93W. Follow Rt. 93W to Davis, WV. At Davis, take Rt. 32S to Canaan Valley. Left unto Cortland Road, to Black Bear Resort.
Alternate Route from Baltimore and Washington- same as above except stay on I-68 past Cumberland, MD to Rt. 219S. Follow 219S through Oakland, MD. To Thomas, WV at Thomas take Rt. 32S to Canaan Valley. Left onto Cortland Road, to Black Bear Resort.
From Northern Virginia – Follow I-66W to I-81S at Strasburg, VA., staying on I-81S only a short distance (about 3 miles), then exit onto Route 55W to Moorefield, WV. The new highway (Corridor H/Route 55) begins at Wardensville. Stay on Corridor H (Route 55) until the road ends. Take a left. Go approximately two and one-half miles. When the road ends, take a right on Route 42. Follow Route 42 until you get to Route 93W. Take a left of Route 93W towards Davis. When Route 93 ends, take a left on Route 32S. Drive approximately 5 miles (go through the town of Davis). Turn left onto Cortland Road and drive one-half mile to Black Bear Resort entrance on left.
Alternate route from Northern Virginia- Take I-66W to I-81N, take Rt. 50W until it intersects with Rt. 93W. Follow Rt. 93W to Davis, WV. At Davis, take Rt. 32S to Canaan Valley. Left onto Cortland Road, to Black Bear Resort.
From Richmond Virginia- Take I-64W to I-81N. Stay on I-81N to Harrisonburg, VA. At Harrisonburg, follow Rt. 33W to Harman, WV. At Harman, take Rt. 32N to Canaan Valley.Either turn right across from the Fire House on Sage Brush Road, then left on Cortland Road, or continue past the Fire House and make a Right onto Cortland Road.
From Pittsburgh PA- Take I-79 to Morgantown, WV. From Morgantown, take I-68E to rt. 42S at Friendsville, MD. Follow Rt. 42S until it intersects with Rt. 219S at McHenry, MD. Follow Rt. 219S through Oakland, MD to Thomas, WV. At Thomas, WV take Rt. 32S to Canaan Valley. Left onto Cortland Road, to Black Bear Resort.
From Columbus OH- take I-70E to I-79S to Morgantown, WV. At Morgantown, WV, follow I-68E to Rt. 42S. at Friendsville, MD. Follow Rt. 42S. Until it intersects with Rt. 219S at McHenry, MD. Either turn right across from the Fire House on Sage Brush Road, then left on Cortland Road, or continue past the Fire House and make a Right onto Cortland Road. to Black Bear Resort.
From Charleston, WV – Take I-79N to rt. 33E at Weston, WV (exit 99). Follow Rt. 33E through Elkins to Harman, WV. At Harman, follow Rt. 32N to Canaan valley. Either turn right across from the Fire House on Sage Brush Road, then left on Cortland Road, or continue past the Fire House and make a Right onto Cortland Road.
