Ski Resorts are Making Snow and Base Depths are Climbing!

the omni homestead resort(Ski areas such as at The Omni Homestead (pictured here this morning) are blasting the slopes!)

I know that my buddy Joe Stevens is paying attention to the rising base depths. The truth is our ski resorts can blast enough snow to cover a football field with a foot of snow (actually more) when they have optimal conditions. Conditions are near perfect right now for laying down the snow and all of the resorts are doing just that. Most ski areas are showing an increase of 2-4″ of manmade snow over the last 24 hours.

THAT will make for some nice skiing and snowboarding out there today. Enjoy!

I TOLD YOU GUYS that the conditions would be much improved going into Wednesday and we’d see a little snow. Hopefully most of you kept those reservations and made the trek to the mountains because things are little much better. The only ski area reporting any measurable snow is Beech with 1″ of new snow in the last 24 hours, but flurries have been falling as of this report.

I’m not going into great detail in this morning’s Mountain Blog as you guys can check the SNOW REPORT for all the trail openings and more information. However, here’s the notables for this morning.

wintergreen ski resortWintergreen Resort – 14° – making snow and upped their base by 5″ and opened 3 more trails to go to 13 of 26. They wrote, “Near perfect morning up here with moderate wind and a brisk 19 degrees.  As promised, we have improved the surface everywhere overnight and have added back trails recently closed.  Upper Tyro, Tequila, Lower Sunrise and Loggers Alley all re-open this am.”

Beech Mountain Resort – 15.4° and a wind chill of -4 at 7:15am. They picked up 1″ of natural snow and made snow all night (still are) and they have two more trails open today so they now show 10 of 15 open.

Winterplace Resort – 15° and making lots of snow.

Snowshoe Mountain – 16° and they added a couple of new trails to their open terrain today and now show 38 of 60 open. They wrote, “There will be snowmaking on open terrain throughout the resort today, HUGE thanks to our Snowmaking team for working around the clock to give us the best snow possible!”

Canaan Valley Resort – 10° and making snow. Although as of 8:30am they had not updated their report we can tell you that lots of great snowmaking is happening.

David Lesher, who runs an awesome weather data service in Davis, WV posted, “December’s total snowfall of 8.7 in. is the least for any December in the 14 years snowfall has been measured here and far below the 12-year mean of 33 inches.”

Timberline Resort – 12° and making lots of show. Open with 13 trails today.

Bryce Resort – 22° and making snow. They are only open for day sessions today. They posted, “Beware of snowmaking conditions as the snowmakers will be making snow throughout the day now that the cold weather has come back into the area! Enjoy the new layer of white snow coating the slopes!”

I’m pretty certain they mean’t “BE AWARE”. NOBODY is bewaring that snowmaking that we all need 😉

Massanutten Resort – 20° and making snow.

Appalachian Ski Mountain – 21° – making snow – Their snow report reflects NO snowmaking last night and that they received 4″ of natural snow in the last 3 days. They DID and ARE making snow, but have received only flurries of natural snow.

App has some fun planned for New Year’s Eve: Ski til 11:30pm and then stay for the Fireworks at Midnight

The Omni Homestead Resort – 17° and making snow

Cataloochee Ski Area – 23° and making snow. They are reporting natural snow but don’t say how much and according to CocoRahs there was a TRACE of snow and according to Local Yokel Weather, there’s no mention of snowfall. We’ll call it a TRACE.

Sugar Mountain Resort – 16.2° and making snow. It is snowing as of 6am.

2014-12-31-wolfPODWolf Ridge Resort – 20° and making snow! They wrote, “Colder temperatures are back and we are back to making snow! The guns came on about 5pm yesterday and we will continue to make for as long as weather permits.”

Interestingly, Wolf’s LIVE webcam is back LIVE this morning and showing snowmaking!

Ober Gatlinburg – 26° and making snow

Wisp Resort – 12° and making snow

Sapphire Valley Ski Area – 28° no snowmaking and they remain closed.

Until tomorrow – THINK COLD and SNOW!
