Notes from around the Southeast –

Heavy rain fell yesterday and last night across much of the region…changing to SNOW in most areas.  That, combined with great snowmaking temps are making the next few days of skiing and riding downright nice!

We have definitely had a “timely winter” thus far.  In season’s past, we’d see periods of thaw that would last for a week or two, making for depleting depths and poor conditions.  THIS winter has been one in which timely blasts of cold and/or snow have saved the conditions just at the moment that cold and snow has been needed.  God is a skier I’ll bet! Some will argue that He’s a snowboarder! Regardless, we appreciate the very timely blasts of cold air.  Things were looking a little ragged around some areas and then when the heavy rains came in…we had to be thinking that this could spell some poor conditions for the Southeast’s ski resorts. That didn’t happen!

Cold temps allowed for snowmaking overnight and most resorts will make snow around the clock today and tonight making for near perfect conditions.  Should be some Kodak moments today and Thursday.  Get us some pics.

Some Observations:

Massanutten is reporting NO CHANGE in base depth after the rains of the last 24 hours and yet they are reporting no new snow either.  While they are making snow now, they didn’t overnight.  Doesn’t that mean a reduction of base is in order? Expect good conditions today on 13 trails at Mass.

Ditto for The Homestead.

Wintergreen Resort in Virginia reported a dusting of snow this morning and now they show blue skies. They told us that Big Acorn lift is closed today for maintenance. The temperatures are dropping . . . natural snow is falling and our snowmakers are gearing up to start making more fresh dry snow today. Come and see why people all over the area rave about our snowmaking. We will be open today from 9am until 10pm skiing and riding on 16 trails. The Plunge will be open from 2pm until 9pm.

Canaan Valley is reporting 1” of snow so far and more expected to accumulate today. They are skiing on 17 trails today.

Snowshoe Mountain is also reporting 1” of snow and more is falling.  They have the most terrain open in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic with 57 trails.  Expect nice conditions there today and Thursday. It was good to see that Snowshoe reduced their base by 2” even with the snow this morning.  Nice job Mountain Ops!

Winterplace is reporting a snow flurry or two and good conditions on 25 trails today.  They are making snow as well.

Wisp is reporting no snowmaking or natural snow in the last 24 hours, they got rain in the last 24 hours, but reported no change in their base. Ah-hem! (That’s me clearing my throat in an attention getting manner.)  Expect nice groomed conditions at Wisp today with temps still hovering around freezing and 32 trails.

Ober Gatlinburg knows how to do it!  They are reporting one inch of new snow in the last 24 hours and still dropped their base (it DID rain yesterday) by 2”. They are skiing on 5 trails and with new natural and manmade snow.

Cloudmont is Alabama is reporting nearly 2” of snow last night and yet they were not able to make snow and they are closed.

Until Next Time!
