Stay up to date by getting notified of new posts!

We updated you guys earlier on the weather forecast. Suffice to say SNOW! Pretty much all day today, Tuesday and into Wednesday.

Today is a SNOW DAY for Ashe, Avery, Carter, Johnson, Mitchell and Watauga county schools so that means discounted skiing and riding for students. Even Appalachian State University, which rarely closes…IS CLOSED for students. The skiing will be GREAT today!

The snow began to fall at about 7pm last night and has not let up. I measured our on my front deck this morning and we have between 9-10" of snow thus far and it’s still snowing! From what we can tell, this snow is dropping as much or more snow further east as it is on the normally favored western slopes.

Here’s some reports thus far:

Dylan Chase in Boone reported 7"
Appalachian – 6"
Cataloochee – 7"
Ski Beech – 7"
Sugar Mountain – 8"
Upper Sleepy Hollow – 9"
Ashe Co. – 8"
Avery Co. – 6"-7"

ROAD CONDITIONS: – So far, this storm has dumped healthy snow totals on all areas of the mountains of West Virginia, Virginia and North Carolina…and yet the roads are amazingly in good shape. The temperatures are hovering at 30° in most places and with that and the DOT crews working the highways…they are pretty clear. Hwy 105 out here is crystal clear and traffic is moving normally. Secondary roads are another thing altogether. Close to 8-10" of snow was on my neighborhood road this morning.

US Highway 321 between Blowing Rock and Lenoir was CLOSED early this morning due to tractor-trailer accidents. Southbound traffic must turn around at the Green Park Inn. North bound traffic is not being allowed to come up Highway 321 to Blowing Rock. That was as of 8:30am so that should clear pretty soon.

The snow is expected to continue and temperatures will dive down to 19° tonight…and then along with MORE SNOW Tuesday and Wednesday comes COLDER TEMPERATURES. Tuesday and Wednesday highs are only expected to be around the low 20s and overnight temps will drop to 11° or so. That will certainly make for some slippery road conditions. The DOT crews will certainly work to keep the main roads clear…but secondary roads and neighborhood roads will remain snow covered most of this week. If you’re driving up…bring your 4WD with you.

DON’T MISS OUT ON THIS SNOW! – The conditions will be phenomenal today…and even though wind kicks in tomorrow…the conditions will be sweet!
