Our neighbors to the north in Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia are getting a good dumping of snow this morning.

Massanutten is reporting 1” already this morning and is expecting a total of 3-7 inches today.  Snowshoe has received 4 inches in the last 24 hours while Wisp is reporting 3 inches, and 5 inches at Bryce.  The final resort in West Virginia to open, Timberline Resort, is looking good for their scheduled opening this Thursday, December 12.

The North Carolina resorts have yet to see anything fall from the sky and it does not appear from the weather forecast that we will.  However, colder and drier conditions are in the outlook which will help out tremendously as [manmade] snow is needed on the ground in a big way.  Beech is down to 1 run today (Freestyle) with an 8-24 inch base.

[UPDATE 10:20AM] I just got an email from Ober – the snow is starting to come down there was well!  GLORY DAYS.

The cold patch is just in time as we’ve got a lot of happening going on this weekend.  We’ll be updating the site, announcements and events, as we progress through the week but here is a taste of what you can expect.

Sugar Mountain is hosting their annual SugarFest event starting Friday and going through the weekend.  SugarFest is always a good time and this year promises to be no different.  Some of the highlights include an Adult Ski Clinic with Olympic Gold and Silver Medalist, Diann Roffe.  Diann won the Sugar G in the 1994 Olympic Games held in Lillehammer, Norway and took home silver in the Giant Slalom in the 1992 games in Albertville, France.  At age 17 she won the 1985 World Championships in Bormio, Italy.  Click here for pricing and details [pdf].  Ski Country Sport will be providing the demos just in time to get your last minute requests to Santa.

Cataloochee is hosting their first annual Ski and Snowboard Swap Saturday fromCataloochee Rail Jam 8am-5pm and Sunday from 8am-2pm with an amazing 50% off sale on all remaining items starting at 2:30 on Sunday.  Cat is also hosting a free rail jam on Friday (December 13!).  Registration opens at 6pm, practice starts at 7pm, and the main event kicks in at 7:30pm.

Snowshoe Resort is having a busy weekend as well with Demo Days on Saturday & Sunday – yet another chance to finalize your list for Santa.  Snowshoe is hosting their first terrain park event of the year as well this Saturday with the Picnic in the Park Rail Jam.  Registration is open at their site.

So, plenty to look forward to this weekend.  We are all looking eagerly anticipating the return of the conditions we got spoiled on at the beginning of the season.  Keep an eye on the weather and your fingers crossed!
