The Cold Sets In – Sugar Opens to the Top

The cold weather has settled into the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast.  Just about all of the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast ski resorts made snow yesterday and last night.  There are wind advisories in effect for both Cataloochee and Sugar.  Cataloochee will see wind chills of -3 today while Sugar will get down to -5 with the wind.

Snow is still expected in the area today, primarily this morning in the WV mountains.  Depending on your favorite source for weather,  you will see predictions ranging from snow around the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast this week starting Monday night and going straight ‘til Wednesday – while others predict more cold rain and ice than snow.

The most notable news of the day is that Sugar Mountain is open to the top today, skiing on Northridge and Switchback.  Sugar was the first to open this year, has the most skiable terrain of the open resorts (Cataloochee), and now is the first to open to the top.  Sugar is certainly the bellwether resort for the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast.

Wintergreen announced today on their blog that they would like to open on Saturday November, 30 – http://wintergreenva.blogspot.com/.

Call for on the mountain reporters and ambassadors

If you recall a couple seasons ago we had a network of on the mountain reporters that would update us on their local resort’s conditions.  We just can’t be everywhere at once.  We are starting this up again.  If you are interested in representing your mountain and getting a little notoriety please drop me an email at [email protected].  At the end of the season we will pick a couple of the more active reporters and reward your efforts by giving away a season pass for the next season.  Free skiing and being recognized as the go to for your mountain – priceless!Frostbite

Before I get to today’s ski conditions, remember to layer up if you are going out today.  Frostbite warning abound so be sure not to have exposed skin.  Sugar is requiring all skiers to wear gloves (which you should ALWAYS do no matter what the temp) and hats. Sugar Mountain

Sugar is making snow today and I think it is safe to assume that they will all day.  They are reporting a 8-32 inch base, up 2-4 inches from yesterday.  Sugar is operating from the top today on Northridge, Switchback, Upper Flying Mile, and Lower Flying Mile.  They still have the yellow lift taking skiers and riders to their destination.

Catalochee Ski Area

Cat is making snow today and has not updated their daily conditions as of the writing of this post – I will update as soon as they do.  You can at least expect conditions to have improved since yesterday with skiing from mid-station on 6 runs – Lower Omigosh, Rabbit Hill, Easy Way, Upper Over Easy, Over Easy and Beginner's Luck, supported by 2 lifts – Omigosh & Easy Way, and 1 conveyor on Beginner’s Luck.  They have been making snow further on up the mountain, so it would not surprise me if they announced opening to the top either today or tomorrow.
