Before I get too far into today’s update I want to repeat my THANK YOUS to all of you who spent your time and money with us on Saturday and the 6th Annual SkiNC Summit. Talia, the Costins and staff at Beech Mountain Resort asked me to pass on their thanks as well as it was a huge turnout and a great time was had by all.

I have not heard how much was raised for Boarding for Breast Cancer and the American Cancer Society but as soon as I do, we will pass that information on.  It was certainly a successful day on and off the mountain!

A LATE FEBRUARY RECORD ATTENDANCE DAY?!?!

This past weekend was one GORGEOUS DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD, no matter which mountain resort neighborhood you may have been visiting. If you played from Wisp Resort to Sapphire Valley you played in GREAT snow and under beautiful blue skies.

We saw some AMAZING CROWDS at Ski Beech on Saturday and there were reports of good skier numbers on Sunday up there as well. I know Sugar was wall-to-wall on Saturday and even though their highway parking lot was not used on Sunday we’re certain they enjoyed what was perhaps one of the best non-holiday weekend skier visit totals – perhaps ever. That can probably be "dittoed" most everywhere this weekend. With all of the crazy, winter weather within prior weekends there were some groups and individuals who canceled prior visits to the mountains. This weekend was so nice that a lot of people turned out across the entire Southeast and Mid Atlantic.

After a full day at Beech Mountain on Saturday I spent a full day sledding in 2-3 FEET of snow at the foot of Beech Mountain. I don’t know many places where you could play around in two feet or more of natural snow in a long sleeve tee shirt and 50° temperatures – but that was Sunday.

Today, Monday, February 22nd – NOT SO PRETTY! I woke up to some of the hardest rain that I’ve heard this winter. That will surely help to clean up some snow/ice covered driveways and roadways around here. Make today a day of chilling and preparing for the NEXT round of winter weather that is due to arrive on Tuesday for most of the region.

This has been a winter of crazy snows and a few more ice storms than usual and it looks like we’re in for more of the same over at least the next week. After a rainy Monday and some icy conditions further north tonight – things get SNOWY again from Tuesday through the weekend. Highs in the teens and 20s are forecasted for the West Virginia ski resort areas through this week with lows in the teens and even single digits as we get deeper into this week.

Tweak that forecast up a few degrees with highs in the low to mid 30s and lows in the teens and twenties for the Virginia and North Carolina ski areas. This week of snow doesn’t look like a big accumulator but it should be nice "ambience" snows. The weekend ahead is looking GREAT with more snow and perfectly cold temps for a great ski getaway!

MAKE PLANS TO ATTEND THE 3RD ANNUAL SKISOUTHEAST.COM / SNOWSHOE MOUNTAIN SUMMIT March 5th, 6th and 7th. It looks like another cold snap is in the mix, bringing more snow and awesome conditions. We had a ball during the one day event at Beech this past weekend and with the Snowshoe Summit being a three day funfest – it only makes sense that it should be three times better. We have all sorts of fun planned and some nice giveaways so jump on over the Summit pages and make plans to attend that one! It would be great to take the same kind of crowd to Snowshoe!

I have a lot to get to today so check back for some trip reports and photos from the Summit and have a great Monday.

OH YEA…YOUR WEBSITE STINKS!

Not a day goes by that we don’t receive emails telling us how much you enjoy what we do around here. However occasionally we get an email that trashes us. We get these kinds of emails from time to time (about once or twice a year) but they’re usually unsigned and I just ignore them.

However since this lady was willing to sign hers I thought we’d share an alternative view of the job we do around here on SkiNC and SkiSoutheast.

"I would like to go skiing this weekend with my family. I live in North Carolina, but am not a native and know little about the resorts.

I find your website totally confusing and hard to navigate. I’d like to find resorts by area not name. I’d like to find prices for lift tickets…the usual questions. After 15 minutes on your website….I’m googling again and hoping to find the information I need somewhere else.

Please don’t dismiss me and be offended…I’m only taking the time to write because I think you have failed miserably at your task and maybe someone ought to let you know….  – Joan N."

We also provide dedicated links to every ski resort website for the rates and additional information. If we provided ALL of the information that you’d need, there would be no reason to link to the ski area websites!

Oh well. We’ll TRY to do better!

We’re on day 84 and there are 53 more days of opportunities to enjoy the snow for the 2009-2010 ski and snowboarding season!

That’s it for today. Go enjoy the snow! Check out the Snow Report at
