Sugar Mountain is running four slopes for your enjoyment today and they are OPEN for night skiing tonight (Sunday night)! Sugar opened to the top of their mountain on Saturday and they were able to make snow some of Saturday.

Mason Woodrow wrote us Saturday evening saying, "Sugar mountain was open top to bottom today! however, switchback was very slow with grass and some bare spots. Upper flying mile was frozen glan mostly. Lower flying mile was mainly packed powder. If Sugar makes some more snow in the next 24 hrs. Switchback will be a lot better. But don’t let that stop you from heading up to sugar, it was very impressive, considering what time of year it is."

Sugar reports, "We are open today for day skiing from 9:00 am until 4:30 pm and tonight from 6:00 pm until 10:00 pm from the top of the mountain. The Yellow Lift will operate, servicing North Ridge, Switchback, Upper Flying Mile and Lower Flying Mile. Weekday Lift Ticket Pricing is in effect. Snowmaking will resume as soon as temperatures allow."

Cataloochee Ski Area in beautiful Maggie Valley, NC is the only other ski resort operating at this time and they are offering three trails with two lifts on a base of 16-30" for day skiing on Sunday.

OH, THE WEATHER OUTSIDE IS…well not exactly frightful – but its EARLY!

My friends we are still in November and there’s some chances for snow making and even some of the natural stuff in the forecast, particularly into the Virginias next weekend.

Snowmaking temps look spotty, but there are some windows of opportunity. Here’s a breakdown of snowmaking chances:

In the North Carolina Mountains:

Look for no snowmaking Sunday through Wednesday night. Then Thursday, Friday and Saturday look good for snowmaking and there may be some around the clock snowmaking next Friday.

Into the West Virginia Mountains:

There’s a FAIR chance for some snowmaking tonight and Monday night with temps in the upper 20s, then little chance for snowmaking into Wednesday-Thursday. Friday and Saturday look great for snowmaking with temps dropping into the teens.

So keep your chins up…and think Snow…and Cold!

See you on the slopes!
