What an awesome 72 hours it has been! I feel like I've been saying this a lot over the last few weeks, but is it really March? This has been a crazy month, with a lot of natural snow. I have thoroughly enjoyed the past few days up here. My place across from Sugar Mountain is a winter wonderland right now! Click on the picture below to see the enlarged version.
There's about 8 inches of snow on the ground right now. It's actually snowed more than that, I'd say 10-11 inches, but the snow has compacted down some. I've ridden at Sugar the past two nights, so tonight I think I might go exploring around my place. I either want to build a little jib line or go exploring in the woods and see if I can find some mellow lines to cruise. Some of the windblown areas in there easily have a foot of snow.
Like I said, I've been at Sugar the past two nights and it has been really good, especially Monday night! It was rather fantastic then as the sides of the trails were lined with boot deep pow stashes. I was able to get face shot after face shot on some of the runs. Below is a pic showing the result of that. You can go to this link, http://www.skinorthcarolina.com/messageboard/showthread.php?t=15927, to see my entire trip report from Monday.
Yesterday wasn't quite as good as the night before, but it was still really fun! A lot of the pow had compacted and been groomed down, but there were still stashes, you just had to search for them. Check out the trip report over on the messageboard… http://www.skinorthcarolina.com/messageboard/showthread.php?t=15932
I can't say I've ridden powder this late in the season here in North Carolina before. It's truly been awesome. I thought my tree and pow riding was done for the season. Nope! Kudos to Sugar for staying open this late in the season, even for night sessions. With Beech and App closed for the season, they are getting a lot of the regulars from those resorts to come and ride. Pics and comments from yesterday that I've seen indicate it was pretty busy during the day. There were a good amount of people out there last night as well, especially considering it was March 26th. This is some great marketing for them.
It hasn't only been good here in NC. Timberline, Canaan, Snowshoe, and Winterplace have all been getting dumped on as well. It's a shame that all of them are closing Sunday.
EDIT: Snowshoe just announced they will be open through April 7th.
I haven't kept up with the exact totals, but I do believe they're somewhere in the 12-18” range for this storm. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Check out the video below that Snowshoe posted from Monday. Messageboard members brookbarrel and WakeBoarder were getting some freshies!
The two remaining resorts in Virginia, The Homestead and Bryce, have seen some natural snow as well. Both are looking really good on the cams this morning! I love how The Homestead keeps pushing back their closing date. They must have some real snow lovers running the place.
More light snow is in the forecast for today and into tomorrow. Winter doesn't want to end! Brad Panovich posted a funny little tidbit of information yesterday. He brought up the fact that the two biggest snow storms for Boone were not actually in winter. Ha. Go figure. Superstorm Sandy happened in the fall and this most recent one occurred in spring. That's pretty funny.
Check back tomorrow and I'll have another update on things for you guys. Click on over to the SKI REPORT to see updated conditions and get out and enjoy the snow while you can!
