Andrea Smith of Snowshoe Resort emailed me the final tallies from the 48 hour snowstorm up at Snowshoe – 15” of sweet powder!  Joe Stevens who is with The Media Center in Charleston, West Virginia still lives just minutes from Snowshoe (but about 2000’ in elevation down) called me to tell me that even down that low he had several inches of snow.  It was more than knee-deep on his young son, Christian.  That is amazing!

Since Snowshoe was blessed with all that snow, let’s get to their forecast first today.

Snowshoe, West Virginia: They are seeing a temperature inversion all their own this morning as it’s 10° at their base and 25° up top.  Snowshoe will see sunny skies Friday and Saturday with highs in the low 40s or so and overnight lows at 21° tonight and near freezing on Saturday night as a bit of rain tries to make it into the Pocahontas County resort.  There’s a 70% chance of rain on Sunday with highs in the upper 40s to low 50s and a 50% chance of rain on Monday.  Monday night and Tuesday they could see a little more snow with highs in the 30s and lows in the 20s.  It looks like it gets mild again by Wednesday with sunny skies and temps in the mid to upper 40s.

Moving to Wisp Resort in Maryland next:  Wisp ended up getting about 8” of snow from the recent storm and today and Saturday will be great days to enjoy the snow with Sunny skies both days and highs in the 40s and lows tonight around the mid to upper 20s.  Sunday looks like rain as does Monday with highs in the 40s.  Tuesday offers up a 50% chance of snow showers and highs around Freezing and lows near 20°

Next on the forecast is Wintergreen Resort in Virginia:  Wintergreen only saw a flurry or two of natural snow, but they’ve been making snow with all of the cold temps.  As with up north, Wintergreen should experience a beautiful day today and Saturday with highs in the 50s, close to 60° on Saturday.  Lows tonight should be around 25° and Saturday night near 35°. There’s only a 50% chance of light rain on Sunday here…and some rain showers on Monday.  Highs Sunday and Monday will be in the 50s. After tonight, there probably won’t be any snowmaking temps until Tuesday night and that is borderline as temps will stay above freezing.

We’re going to take you to Ober Gatlinburg in Tennessee next: Ober will also see Partly Cloudy skies today and Saturday with highs both days in the mid 40s or so. Tonight they should make snow at 25° and that’s the last they will see of sub freezing temps until maybe Tuesday night. They too are looking at rain Monday and Tuesday.  Wednesday is looking pretty with mid 40s, sunny skies and lows overnight around the freezing mark.

Here’s a look at the North Carolina Mountains:

37° this morning at Ski Beech, Sugar 29°, Boone and Blowing Rock are at 20°.  By now you guys know what that means – temperature inversion.

We’re entering a week ahead that is historically has been VERY COLD and SNOWY.  Record low temps in the minus 4 to minus 16° have been recorded in years past during the historical week ahead and snow…how about every day ahead for the next week has shown 5”, 6”, 7”, and up to 8.5” of snow.

The records for this date were:

69° record high set back in 1950
-11° record low set back in 1987
5” of snow – record set back in 1977

We won’t see any records broken today as temps will be about 5-7° warmer than normal today.
