After seven straight, GREAT days of skiing up at Snowshoe Mountain, it is GREAT to be home, wireless, in my comfort zone and posting this morning. Happy New Year again everyone.  One quick to my buddy Joe Stevens.  We tried to locate you all morning through about 1pm yesterday and never saw you guys on the slopes.  Sorry we missed you my friend.  We’ll look forward to making some turns up at Wisp later in the month.

Here’s some notes from around the Southeast:

Wintergreen Resort in Virginia will be open today from 9am until 10pm skiing and riding on all 24 trails. The Plunge will be open from 10am until 9pm. The Slide will be open from 10am until 4pm today weather permitting. Snowmaking weather should return later this week and will occur on all open trails in an effort to provide the best surface possible and continue to increase our current average base of 30"-36".

Canaan Valley’s website was dead in the water this morning.  (Been there!:-( ) They are open with 34 trails and good conditions.

Snowshoe made snow overnight, but expect a few showers today. It will be warming today with a wintry mix falling through this evening. All slopes have been groomed except Choker, Moonshine, lower Shays and the halfpipe at Silver Creek.

Timberline Resort hasn’t updated their ski report since Saturday, but they have plenty of snow and although there are some thin coverage areas…they have good conditions on 33 trails.

WISP Resort is in great shape, skiing on 34 trails and terrain park lovers will want to note that they have a 40 Ft. Rainbow, 40 Ft. Flat Up-Flat, 20 Ft. Wall Ride C-Box, 12 Stair Steel Rail, Down Flat Down Combo, 2 Large Table Tops for your pleasure.

Cataloochee is open for Day Skiing today and their popular tubing park is now on a regular season schedule, which means that they will not be open today through Wednesday.  They will reopen TUBING for the rest of the season Thursdays through Sundays.  They are skiing and snowboarding for DAY skiing today.

Hawksnest’s Terrain Park is OPEN and receiving some great reviews. They now have a rainbow box, 20 foot C-Box, rainbow rail, flat rail, spine and numerous snow hits. Additionally, they have began their FREE Ladies Day skiing on Wednesdays. Ladies receive a free lift ticket. They will be adding new features each day to continue building a great terrain park. Hawksnest will have 9 slopes serviced by 3 lifts to the top. On Jan 2-5 they will be open at 9am to 10pm for skiing/boarding. Snow tubing will be open 11am to 9pm. The Hawksnest staff wishes you and your family a great holiday season!

Despite reports otherwise…Sapphire Valley is CLOSED Monday and Tuesday.  Wet, mild weather down there and thunderstorms in the forecast have prompted them to wait until Wednesday to reopen.  We spoke with Joyce there in the recreation center and she assures us that Rick Creel, who was appointed to update the websites regarding slope conditions will be contacting us to make that happen.  Bottom line is today and Tuesday – no skiing at Sapphire.

Ski Beech is operating on a base of 24-36" and a Variable Granular surface on 14 of 15 slopes. Today is Ladies Day! Guys…chance the drizzly forecast and go meet some ladies!

We have been trying to get the word out that Wolf Laurel Slopes and Zero Gravity will sponsor a terrain park competition on January 7th. Registration is at 10 a.m. Outdoor Exposure will be at the base of the mountain for demo days as well.

The weather does look a bit dicey for the next couple of days, but Winter returns and expect some COLDER temps and natural snow…and snowmaking weather beginning late Wednesday or Thursday.

Until Next Time!
