Many of you have noticed that we have changed up our posting schedule a little bit. We received some nice emails about the new weather data that we are showing and we’re working to grow that information even today. Stay tuned! For those unaware, we are now first posting the weather forecasts and some interesting record temps and snowfall data on SkiNC each morning. That information shows up on the front page (middle column) and then we also compile the weather data for ALL of the Southeast’s ski areas and post that next on www.SkiSoutheast.com. Be sure to check that out daily.
Next we post the notes from around the region, and generate the slope conditions reports for all of the ski areas, document the base depths, etc and then we post the Photos of the Day…and last we post our compiled On-Snow reports. All of this takes a few hours each morning.
Here’s the notes for today:
Bryce Resort in Virginia reported that they made 1-3” of manmade snow since yesterday. They are still skiing on six trails with groomed conditions.
Massanutten made snow last night and is skiing on 13 trails.
Wintergreen Resort hasn’t updated their report this morning but they did report that they closed one lift for maintenance. That is probably why they are only showing 16 trails open today. We haven’t had a chance to communicate with Frankee Love up there yet this morning, but they have closed six trails from yesterday’s open tally and they also dropped their base depth by 4-8”. Could be an adjustment…could be from the rain of two days ago. We’ll update as soon as we can.
Snowshoe got another 3” of snow yesterday (82” on the season) and they are looking quite sweet for today and 57 trails. All trails were groomed overnight except Choker and Lower Shays.
Timberline Resort saw another 2” of snow (69” on the season) and they are looking great today on 26 trails.
Wisp Resort saw 3” of snow yesterday (65” on the season) and they have 31 trails operating today with many groomed and all in great shape today.
Appalachian should be in beautiful shape today with nice, firm snow and they made snow last night. The low this morning was 26 °. No change in base (nice job) and a beautiful day to enjoy the very nice conditions.
Cataloochee is recording a temp of 25° this morning. They also made snow overnight and added in the additional natural snowfall to their base and they are looking very nice today. Tubing is open as well. Our Cat Crew should take note of the following. Tammy Brown says, “… don’t forget to join the Cat Crew on Thursday nights here for the Cataloochee Challenge Cup Race Series. Individuals race against the clock for the best of two runs. Top three challengers in both men’s and women’s age divisions win cool stuff. You must be 21 years of age or older to participate. Racing begins at 8pm with a post awards party at 10pm, so dust off those racing skills and test your luck. The Cat is where it’s at on Thursday night’s Challenge Cup Race Night. Call the ski area for more information.
Hawksnest is looking tons better today with great snowmaking, cold temps and grooming this morning. They received about 2” of snow from the storm yesterday morning and with the low this morning dipping to 26° the slopes should be great. They have reopened the tubing hill for today as well. Hawksnest also is announcing “The Nest Games” that will take place in ten days. It sounds like a great competition and while we will cover more of it here later…you can check out the details on the website – www.SkiHawk.com !
Sapphire has posted reports two days in a row. Now we’re getting there. But hey guys, cheer up down there! RJ’s crew posted this message this morning, “This may be the last good week for skiing. Call 828-743-7663 before travel.”
Guys…come on…things will get better. For those unaware, Sapphire Valley is located a little more south of all of the ski areas in North Carolina and they’ve had to fight to keep snow on the slopes during this mild pattern. While we have gotten bursts of cold and snow…they have seen fewer snowmaking ops and little snow. But guys – Take a lesson from Cloudmont, even further South. Make snow when you can and be happy giving fans what they want…SNOW…when it’s available. Sapphire was not able to make snow last night and it’s looking pretty grim through next week. We’ll keep you posted.
Ski Beech got another added one-inch of snow yesterday morning after the initial ski report was posted. That and snowmaking last night will make for a great day to enjoy FREE SKIING for the guys as today is Men’s Day at Ski Beech. Beech has 14 of 15 trails going.
Sugar Mountain has become so conservative in their reporting it is amazing! We are so darned impressed guys. What gives? Again this morning WE show that they should have added another inch to their snowfall received from yesterday morning after their initial report was posted (we added it) and they also made snow (still are) and conditions should be great at Sugar today with 18 trails AND tubing operating today. Very cool Gunther!
Wolf Laurel showed a drop in base and is reporting good conditions and 16-40” base on 12 trails.
Conditions should be sweet today and Friday so get out and ski!
Until Next Time!
