Weather

Stay up to date by getting notified of new posts!

It is chilly this morning.

33° at 7:30am this morning at my office, and here’s some other temps from around the region:

33° at Ski Beech
35° at Sugar Mountain
39° at Appalachian Ski Mountain
37° at Hawksnest Ski Resort
30° at Cataloochee Ski Area

Normals for this time of year are 44° for the high temp and we will be some 8° warmer than that today; and  22° is the normal low.  We will be about 8° warmer than that as well.  We’d like to be experiencing what we did LAST year on this very day. We saw a colder-than-normal high of 35° and a low of 22° which is THE normal low temp.  We also had a little snow this time last year>

The records for this date around the High Country area were as follows:

62° was the record high, set back in 1950
minus 16 degrees was the record low set in 1966
We saw 7.0” of snow in 1966 as well on this date.

January 30th, 1966 had to be one RAW day!  Minus 16° for the low and seven inches of snow on top of that.  That HAD to create some rather dry powder!

Today’s Forecast:

We are expecting to see a little snow this evening and into Tuesday.  The call right now is from 1-2” around most of the region with isolated 2-4” accumulations along the very same favored western slopes.

Here’s the details:

Monday…Widespread dense fog this morning. Then mostly cloudy this afternoon with with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms highs in the lower 50s. Winds becoming west at 10 to 15 mph. Chance of rain 30 percent. Overnight low 30°

Tuesday…Mostly cloudy with a chance of snow showers in the morning…Then partly cloudy in the afternoon. Windy. Cooler with highs in the mid to upper 30s. Northwest winds 20 to 30 mph. Gusts up to 50 mph in the morning. Chance of snow 30 percent. Overnight low 23°

Wednesday…Mostly sunny. Highs in the mid to upper 40s. Southwest winds 5 to 10 mph. Overnight low 27°

Thursday…Mostly cloudy with a 40 percent chance of rain showers. Highs in the mid 40s. Overnight low 30-35°

Friday…Partly cloudy with a 30 percent chance of rain showers. Highs in the mid 40s to near 50°. Lows in the mid 30s.

Saturday…Partly cloudy with a 30 percent chance of rain showers. Highs in the mid 40s. Lows in the mid 30s.

Sunday…Partly cloudy. Highs in the lower 40s.

Normal Winter Weather now seems to be right around the corner and February and March should be good if you’re into cold and periods of snow.

Until Next Time!
