Mother Nature has finally cooperated and Snowshoe Mountain will “drop the rope” on a new season Saturday, Dec 5th

Snowshoe, WV—Mother Nature seems to have finally turned the page to winter, and Snowshoe Mountain Resort will take advantage of some great winter weather to kick-off the 2009.2010 winter season tomorrow morning at 9am. With several inches of fresh snow having fallen on the resort this week—with more in the forecast for tomorrow—and colder overnight temperatures allowing Snowshoe’s region’s-best snowmaking system to coat their slopes, the resort plans to open with a 12” average base across its open terrain. Snowshoe’s annual “rope drop” ceremony, signifying the start to a new season, will take place atop the Heislers Way slope.

Snowshoe will be just the third Mid-Atlantic or Southeast resort to open this season, following two North Carolina Resorts. Resorts up and down the East Coast have suffered from the mild early season, with only a handful of resorts in New England open thus far. On Saturday, Snowshoe will open both the Snowshoe Basin and Silver Creek areas, making available at least 7 trails and 3 lifts, as well as the carpet lift and teaching area at Snowshoe, servicing Snowshoe’s Ski and Snowboard School. With some cooperation from Mother Nature overnight, the resort may open more extensive terrain, including adding Terrain Park features. Silver Creek will provide night skiing for guests on Saturday night, but plans to close for the week at 4:30 p.m. Sunday. The Snowshoe basin area will remain open through next week with a regular 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. schedule. Tubing and other adventure activities will not be open this weekend.

Yesterday afternoon Snowshoe received ½” of snow, and was able to make snow beginning at 1p.m. A cold Friday may allow more than 24 hours of continuous snowmaking leading up to Saturday morning. The resort is also expecting an additional 1-3” of snow throughout the day Saturday.

In addition to the on-the-snow fun, The Village at Snowshoe will offer guests a variety of dining and shopping options, as well as family fun at the Split Rock Pools and Big Top entertainment center facilities. Early Season lift tickets for Snowshoe are available for $55 or $25 for Saturday’s night session. Lodging packages are still available for the weekend, and the resort’s terrific Ski Free/Stay Free deal, offering a free fourth day of lift tickets and fourth night of lodging, as well as free lift tickets for children 12 and under, is available through tomorrow, December 6th. More information on the resort’s lodging and lift ticket packages are available at snowshoemtn.com or by calling 877-441-4FUN.
