Ski Resorts Reporting Nice Spring Conditions and Plenty of Base!

I am sitting here in somewhat snowy Washington, D.C. this morning as I update the slope conditions for our region. I was a little surprised to see light snow as we drove in and truthfully there’s only a light bit of dusting on some of the rooftops as I look out my hotel window – but it IS snow. That’s kind of put me in the mood…so here goes.

Touring the regions weather information it appears that we’re all displaying 30-40° and those morning lows are all displayed on the SLOPE CONDITIONS PAGE.

We received a fair number of photos overnight and I will get those posted when I get back to the High Country on Sunday. It’s hard to believe but here I am in the nation’s capital, in a pretty high-priced hotel room ($170 a night) and the internet connection must be powdered by a couple of sick hamsters.

With that in mind, I am applying our “Information IN is Information OUT” concept and these are notes as provided by the ski areas themselves or through Trip Reporters.

RESORT NOTES OF INTEREST

Cataloochee – They are Day Skiing Only and 10 slopes are open.

Hawksnest is open today from 9am til midnight on 8 trails and their tubing hill is open as well.

Sapphire Valley – RJ Grady wrote, “SV Ski is open March 10 & 11 for skiing, snowboarding and snow tubing. Current conditions are great. Grooming was completed early Saturday morning. Warmer temperatures and spring break mean BIKINI skiers. Come enjoy the last weekend of the season open to the public. The staff gets it after this weekend!”

Sugar Mountain – Boss Hawg will be there from 4-6pm with the best Bluegrass in the South! Tubing is OPEN as is 20 trails.

Wolf Ridge is open for this weekend as well.

Wintergreen Resort in Virginia is open with 25 trails today. They were paying attention to our comments about none of the other Virginia ski areas adjusting their base depths. Wintergreen dropped their base by 10” since yesterday. That is obviously NOT a one day drop, but an adjustment of a few days. Hats off to them. Now if we can just get the other VA resorts to take note. None of the Virginia resorts (except Wintergreen) have changed their base numbers in more than two weeks!

Wintergreen Resort is hosting their “Winter Carnival” today! Lots to do: Ski the obstacle course, grab some extra cash in the money machine, listen to great music, eat lots of delicious food, and win fun prizes. Did someone say “Money Machine!?”

Snowshoe Mountain – Snowshoe is expected to experience sunshine throughout the day with rain possible after 4pm. Slaymaker and Cascade will be closed until 2 p.m. today for ski racing. Skiers and riders can expected frozen granular conditions across both Snowshoe and Silver Creek. Right now, skiers who purchase a new season pass for the 2007/2008 season can ski for the remainder of this season for free. Call 1-877-441-4FUN to purchase your pass today.

Wisp Resort was the cold spot in the Southeast and Mid Atlantic this morning with 28. They are also hosting some Nastar Racing and the Mid Atlantic Classic Halfpipe comp today.

Ober Gatlinburg is Open today and Sunday and then they will end their season.

Have a nice day on the slopes…and send your Photos and we’ll share them with the world!

Until Next Time…

THINK COLD AND SNOW!!!
