The weather could not be better for the up and coming President’s Day weekend! Cold temps have allowed the resorts that wanted to – to make snow and many of the ski areas across the region also have received as much as 8” of snow this week with more in the forecast for this weekend!

This five week stretch of cold weather has been phenomenal for the resorts as skier visits have been on a record setting pace that has even made up for a sub par Christmas and MLK Weekend holiday period. The last few weekends have seen the kind of crowds that make for a successful season and this weekend’s weather is insuring a great crowd this weekend as well. That’s super news for ski area operators and management.

We’ll be posting some more news later today, so check back. In the meantime, here are some details for this morning!

Canaan Valley Resort – Minus 2° – 2” of snow – They are day skiing only on 37 trails with Frozen Granular Conditions.

Snowshoe Mountain – Minus 4° – 1” of new snow! Lindsay Kutsko reported, “We had an inch of snow accumulation and the sub zero temperatures made for a lot of snowmaking last night! All trails were groomed overnight except for Lower Shays and there’s a pristine corduroy surface of groomed packed powder out there this morning for first tracks. All 57 trails are open today and be aware that the Powderridge Lift will open late today. This afternoon at the Silver Creek Ski Area, Cubb will close at 4:30 p.m. and Mountaineer will run in its place from 4 – 9 p.m. Looking forward to President’s Day weekend, it looks as though we’ll be making snow overnight, grooming each morning and all trails will be open with great conditions.”

Timberline Resort – Minus 4° – 2-3” of snow! Great conditions on 30 trails.

Winterplace Resort – They received 1” of snow and they are 100% open with great conditions.

Wisp Resort is reporting 3° and 3” of new snow (8” in the last 48 hours) with 31 trails open!

Massanutten Resort – 11° – Snowmaking to continue today on Diamond Jim and Upper Dixie Dare. They are 100% open with 10 lanes of tubing as well.

Wintergreen Resort – 4° – They are making snow during the overnight hours and conditions could not be better. They are 100% open today!

Appalachian Ski Mountain – 7° – Trace of Snow – 100% Open and Groomed Trails Await!

Cataloochee Ski Area – 13° – Trace of Snow – 100% Open, plus tubing open. Also, don’t forget to join the Cat Crew tonight for the Cataloochee Challenge Cup Race Series. Individuals race against the clock for the better of two runs. Top three challengers in both men’s and women’s’ age divisions win cool stuff. Racing begins at 8pm with a post race awards party at 10pm, Tube World located in Maggie Valley, across from Ghost Town four miles from the ski area will be open from 4pm until 10pm.

Hawksnest Ski Resort – 4.4° – 1” of new Snow – They are open today. After we updated our report on Wednesday, they up and closed up for the day! High winds were the blame. We watched them groom the slopes yesterday morning and then they must have made a last minute decision to shut down. The winds have subsided and they are open today and we watched as they groomed the trails again and they should have very nice conditions for today!

Sapphire Valley – They are open, but don’t trust any of the reports you’re seeing from any reporting service since they have not updated any reports or their website in over a week. Expect good conditions, but there’s no report of how good!

Ski Beech – 2.2° – 1-2” of new Snow! – We just saw a wind chill at 7:45am of -8° so it’s COLD up there! They are also making snow today and are 100% open. Expect great conditions atop their 5506’ elevation! The highs up there today should top out in the mid 20s or so, so bundle up!

Sugar Mountain – 1.4° – 1-2” of new Snow! – Sugar made snow late yesterday and they have turned the snowguns off after 1-2” of snow fell. The view atop the Sugar Ski & Country Club Camera that we have on top of the Big Red slope is displaying some awe-inspiring shots and we watched as one of the groomers came around across the new powder up top. Oh MAN does that look good!

Wolf Ridge Resort – Trace of snow – They sure LOOK like they got about an inch of snow but they are only reporting a dusting this morning. Expect great conditions today at The Wolf.

Until Next Time…

THINK COLD AND SNOW!!!
