All of the Southeast’s ski resorts are making snow like crazy and with the high temps staying in the low to mid 30s across the region, we may see snowguns going around the clock all week. We may see a period or two where the highs creep slightly above snowmaking ops and even so, every night for the long range forecasting period looks perfect for making snow. Conditions are absolutely great across the board. Pick a resort, pick a slope and go have a great time. Blue skies, cold temps and manmade powder on top of the natural snow from this weekend.
We want to thank Kent Jackson and Eric Hess for attending the Southeast Special Olympics going on over at Appalachian yesterday. Both guys got us a ton of photos and reports and we’ll be posting those as the day goes on.
Some Notes Around the Region:
All of the Virginia resorts except The Homestead reported snowmaking. They are all reporting groomed conditions except Wintergreen Resort, which reporting Manmade and Packed Powder. Wintergreen says that snowmaking will continue around the clock as they gear up for a great weekend on the mountain. Thanks to their automated snowmaking system they will be reopening more trails by the weekend. Today, they will be skiing and riding on 16 trails and 4 lifts will be running. All trails were groomed overnight and have a packed powder surface. The Plunge is open today with 2 hour sessions starting at 2:00 pm for some thrilling tubing.
West Virginia got quite a good snowfall from this weekend’s storm and with that and snowmaking, resorts up there are n beautiful shape. “A bluebird day”, as Andrea Smith of Snowshoe Mountain calls it!
Speaking of Snowshoe, it was 9° up there this morning and Snowshoe has such nice conditions that they are only making snow at night.
Timberline found an extra 15” of snow on the season than we are reporting. We’re gonna stick with our reporting since we have been updating it every day throughout the season and they have missed a couple of weeks worth of days as the season has progressed. We have them the same as their neighbor resort (Canaan) at 80” on the season. Great conditions up there today…
The North Carolina Mountains are looking as nice as they have looked all season!
Appalachian has their terrain park closed for about ½ of the day while they do a little focused work on it. Hard Core and Thin Slice are also closed for dedicated snowmaking, although on App’s website they are showing them as open. That gives App 7 trails operating today. The surface yesterday was remarkable according to all reports and today should be only better.
Cataloochee picked up a little more snow after Monday’s slope conditions update, giving them 25” of snow on the season. Tuesdays are Mens Day at Cataloochee and guys purchasing a full price adult day, twilight or night lift ticket will receive a free any level ski or snowboard lesson. Also, don’t forget that Thursday is the 4th and final race of the Cataloochee Challenge Cup Race Series. Individuals race against the clock for the best of two runs. Top three challengers in both men’s and women’s age divisions win cool stuff. You must be 21 years of age or older to participate. Racing begins at 8pm with a post awards party at 10pm, so dust off those racing skills and test your luck. The Cat is where its at on Thursday night’s Challenge Cup Race Night. Call the ski area for more information. Also, don’t forget to come out and support the US Ski Team on Friday, February 10 for US Ski Team Day. as Cat kicks off the Olympic week by donating $1 off each lift ticket sold on that Friday to help the US Ski Team GO FOR THE GOLD!
Hawksnest Resort is looking amazing right now. Lots of snowmaking, 8 trails and their popular tubing hill are all in perfect shape. Word has it that TOP GUN may be open within a week…maybe sooner.
Sapphire Valley has been making snow since the weather turned cold and their plan is to open for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday for night skiing only, and then for this Saturday and Sunday they will open from 9am until 10pm each day. Nobody else is providing that information so you heard it hear first.
Ski Beech reported 16° this morning and they have been blasting the slopes and the reports are that Ski Beech was absolutely gorgeous yesterday, so today should be even better!
