Peachy . . .

Let’s be honest, usually, by this time of the year we have seen some temporary closings or “suspended ski operations”, due to some warm spells, etc. But this year, everything is GENERALLY going as planned. Resorts operate better under these more predictable conditions. I am happy to report that everything is . . . just peachy.

Today brings warm, wet, weather to everyone, but tomorrow (late) afternoon the cold air returns with some snow throughout.

NC mountains are holding-up

Beech: This evening (6-9pm), Beech is kicking-off their trivia season . . . “Our Thursday Night Trivia Series at the Taproom & Grill is back by popular demand! This winter we’re hosting 10 weeks of noggin’ scratchin’ good ole fashioned fun.”

Today, Beech Mountain is open until 9pm, on 11 runs and 4 lifts. They also have 4 lanes of tubing open for action.

Appalachian Ski Mountain: The three terrain parks are still looking really good (on the webcams) at App. Add-in the good fall-lines with superb grooming, and it should be a great day at Appalachian.

Wolf Ridge: Open until 10pm! Skiing and Riding on 4 runs with 3 lifts operating.

Cataloochee: Just released their holiday schedule for your planning purposes . . . “Please remember night skiing continues 7 nights a week with the exception of Christmas Eve when we will close at 4:30pm.  Tube World operates until 10pm each night with the exception of Christmas Eve when their last session goes out at 4pm.  The ski area will be open on Christmas Day from 1pm until 10pm and will be serving Christmas dinner with all the trimmings beginning at 1pm.  Don’t forget Santa will be here after a long winters night to ski off all those goodies he picked up along the way.  Tube World will open at 2pm on Christmas Day.”

Ski Sapphire: Ski area is open today until 8pm . . . 3 runs and 2 lifts. In addition, the 500′ Frozen Falls Tube Park is open from 10am until 6pm.

VA is getting ready for a good weekend.

Massanutten: “Rain arriving later this afternoon or evening. More seasonal air arrives over the weekend, snowmaking will resume as temperatures allow. We will be skiing and riding from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm tonight. Terrain park is set up on lower Nutten-To-It.”

Today, Massanutten is open on 6 runs with 5 lifts.

Bryce: Open today until 5pm on 7 runs with 3 lifts.

Wintergreen: “It’s a whirlwind of weather changes, but our mighty team of snowmakers have used their creativity to keep things under control and conditions have been great. During cold periods we put out tons of great snow that has provided a base that will withstand the short periods of temps above normal. We have a 36+ inch base of snow, and it’s not going anywhere fast.”

Unseasonably warm in West Virginia

Snowshoe: Boy, yesterday I skied the ‘shoe and it was a blast. It was the first time I have been here where Cupp Run and Shay’s Revenge have been open . . . just say, I was on Cloud 9!

Today, “We are expecting some rain showers today so make sure you get out there and test out that rain gear. Colder temperatures are in the future along with snow in the forecast later in the week. The Soaring Eagle lift will remain closed today due to electrical issues but is looking to be open by tomorrow. Camp 99, Widowmaker, and Lower Hootenanny will also be closed. Upper Flume will remain open for accessing the Basin from the South Mountain area. You can catch a shuttle back from the Village.”

Snowshoe/Silver Creek have had a good season so far.

Winterplace: The forecast at Winterplace is not unlike the rest of the region, but, a good weekend is in-store . . . “Cloudy with off an on showers. Snow in the forecast for Friday night and Saturday morning.”

Canaan Valley: Warm this morning in the Canaan Valley with the am temp right at 41°. But David Lesher  (@ canaanmtnsnow.com) is not too suprised, “No measureable snow has fallen in the past ten days, leaving the winter total snowfall so far still at 26 inches. Although it’s unusual for no change in total snowfall to occur from Dec 10 to Dec 20, it’s no indication of prospects for snow for the remainder of the winter. The winter of 2006-07 is an excellent example.”

Today, Canaan Valley Resort is open with 13 runs and 4 lifts, until 4:30pm.

Wisp saw sub-freezing temps overnight

Wisp: The only regional resort to dip below freezing last night. But, with the high humidity sometimes the wet-bulb temperature just does not work out, for snowmaking. That might have happened at Wisp last night.

Today, Wisp has 9 runs and 5 lifts open. The Mountain Coaster and Tubing are open from 4-8pm.

Ober is holding steady, thanks to their warm-weather snowmaking system

Ober: is open from noon to 10pm today with 3 runs and 2 lifts. Tonight is College Night . . . “To participate, please bring your valid college ID/proof of enrollment & $10 cash or 10 canned foods/non-perishable food items and exchange them for a night session lift ticket good for that evening 6-10 pm.”

That’s all for today.
