One More Weekend of Fun and SOME SURPRISES for Today as well!

We’re combining today’s column for both SkiNC and SkiSoutheast and since today is officially the LAST DAY of skiing in North Carolina , we will begin the report with Cataloochee.

There was some talk of Cataloochee possibly opening not only today, April 1st, but again on April 8th.  Tammy Brown wrote me yesterday afternoon that they had decided that April 1st would do it and that they were not going to attempt any further marketing coups for the 2005-2006 season. We’d say that they’ve had enough time in the spotlight!

Tammy said, “As I am writing this on Friday afternoon, it is a balmy 60° and I am looking out on a slope that has some spots of snow that are over 10 feet deep still yet!” She also added, “After a season that lasted 120 days and with all the snow we had, who would have believed we accomplished that with one of the warmer seasons we have ever had?!?”

That IS remarkable…and as we have said numerous times this season – that could not have been accomplished without the perfect timing of cold and snowy blasts of Arctic air and the snowmakers in the United States.

Cataloochee will close for the season at 4:30pm today and they will be open on four slopes and trails with three out of five lifts operating.   Intermediate Rock Island Run serviced by the Rock Island Run Quad Chairlift, Intermediate Lower Omigosh serviced by the Omigosh Double Chairlift, and Beginners Easy Way and Beginners Rabbit Hill serviced by the Easy Way Triple Chairlift on a base that General Manager, Chris Bates says is ENOUGH snow to ski or ride on into April.  They have groomed this morning.

By the way Cataloochee is offering day skiing only today for $2.75!

SUGAR MOUNTAIN MADE SNOW LAST NIGHT!?

In a surprise marketing move, Sugar Mountain made snow last night and will be open on Saturday with a base of 30-60” of manmade snow, with 18 trails of groomed manmade powder! (***See important details on this marketing coup at the bottom of this column!)

WINTERGREEN RESORT IS HOSTING ONE COOL WEEKEND OF FUN STARTING TODAY!

Today is the first day of Wintergreen’s two day Wicked Huge Park Party event! The forecast for today and tomorrow is for beautiful blue skies and warm temps. They will be open both days from 9am until 4:30pm.

Wintergreen has spent all week preparing for this event building terrain park features the whole length of Dobie, building a pond skimming lake, and more. You can expect good music, good food and lots of fun.

They plan food and music from 10am to 5pm both days. Then at noon both days they will be featuring a “SICKEST TRICK” contest.  The winner will receive a FREE 2006-2007 Lift Ticket! They also have costume judging both days at 1:30pm. (TeleDave – you should go on Sunday!) The winner gets a free 2006-2007 Lift Pass.

On Saturday Only – they have their Pond Skimming contest and the winner of that wins a Ski & Ride Pass for next season. The BEST FLOP gets a Free 2006-2007 Tubing Pass.

Sounds like a lot of fun in Virginia today and Sunday.

MOVING INTO WEST VIRGINIA – Snowshoe is saying to expect a little rain today.  They also have some FUN planned for today with a “LAST HURRAH” Weekend. Enjoy music, games and the Pond Skimming Competition, all happening on Skidder Slope throughout the day.  More impressive is the fact that Snowshoe STILL has 30 trails to be enjoyed for one more weekend of skiing and riding.  Sunday will be a nice, sunny day so if you want one more day or a weekend of skiing Snowshoe is the place!

Timberline Resort has 28 trails open (when they updated yesterday) and you can expect much the same today. We can’t post info about Timberline today without mentioning that these guys did a vastly improved job of keeping us posted this season about conditions and things that were happening.  Thanks to Pam Long for keeping us fed with info.

UNFORTUNATELY we also have to mention that it has been a real bummer to see them TURN THERE CAMERAS off and not show any updates since 3/22/2006.  Not cool…  Everyone expects Spring to make for Spring Conditions.  The cams should have stayed on.

WISP RESORT IN MARYLAND – Not only have these guys kept the cameras running (nice tough Lori and crew) they have 17 trails to play on and are PROUD to show that there are many areas of Spring Conditions – meaning that you’ll have some thin coverage areas to water-ski through, some bare areas…but PLENTY of ski and snowboarding terrain to play on.

Only ONE DAY left to ski in North Carolina and just TWO DAYS north into West Virginia and Maryland .  Go get ‘em.

*** (OF COURSE THE SUGAR STATEMENT IS AN APRIL FOOLS JOKE! I doubt we fooled anyone, but we had to put this in today!)

Until Next Time…
