Ahhh . . . night skiing under the stars, as the big full moon is peering up over the horizon. The sound of firm snow under-foot . . . it doesn’t get any better. If you haven’t experienced it, I urge you to do so.

We hit a real milestone as every resort, that is open, is also offering night skiing and riding. The exception being Canaan, but they too have extended hours . . . open until 6pm! The resorts usually have to stretch themselves thin to stay open late, so pay your local mountain a visit at least once this year, after dark.

All that being said, tonight MIGHT not be the most ideal. Rain develops later this afternoon into the evening. So the best time to get out is ASAP!

NC has a nice morning/afternoon in store, but weather warnings (rain/wind) are in place later today

Appalachian Ski Mountain: Today, App is open on 10 runs and 4 lifts. Tonight marks their second night of their late-night sessions (open until Midnight).

Beech Mountain: Skiing and riding on 11 runs, served by 7 lifts. Beech is open until 10pm tonight. For the trivia lovers out there, Beech Mountain Brewery has their weekly trivia from 6-9pm . . . the theme is Harry Potter Trivia tonight! Might be fun to do if it’s a little rainy/windy on the slopes.

Cataloochee: Holding steady with 14 runs, but with 100% of their lifts operating (5 of 5), it drastically cuts down on lift lines, at this time of year.  CAT has 3 aerial lifts, and 2 surface lifts . . . this combination really caters to the beginner, intermediate, and advanced skier/rider.

CAT has 100% lighted nights

Sapphire Valley: Holding steady with 2 runs and 3 lifts. Sapphire mentions that Frozen Falls Tube Park is now “groomed to maintain a snow depth of 24 – 36″ for an optimal tubing slope”.

Wolf Ridge: Open until 10pm on 4 runs and 3 lifts.

Wisp adds two trails to the count

Wisp: Skiing and Riding until 9pm with 14 trails (up from 12) served by 7 lifts.

WV continues to unveil more terrain:

Snowshoe: For any skier/rider it’s really fun to watch a resort debut more and more terrain, the trend continues with Snowshoe as . . . “Conditions are looking fantastic as we continue the holiday season. New terrain opens today so be sure to go check out Upper Ballhooter and Skip Jack for their opening runs of the season! Hats off to our snowmakers and groomers who have really outdone themselves this season. Slaymaker/Spur will have a delayed opening this morning for ski team practice. Timberjack is open as a ski trail without features for the time being.”

Canaan Valley: “The ski area is open with 22 trails to ride, including Timber Trail, Valley Vista, and Upper Spruce from the top of the mountain.  We have also opened our natural snow trails, including Dark Side of the Moon and Weiss Meadows 2 and 3!  These trails are natural snow, so they may not be open for long.  Come take advantage of all the new terrain!  The ski slopes will be open until 6pm today.  Our tube park and ice skating rink will also operate extended hours for the holiday week.”

Timberline: Yesterday, Timberline “Mountain crews are working diligently to groom out the snow made over the last couple days. Salamander and Lower Almost Heaven open sometime tomorrow.” This morning, it looks like they aren’t blowing snow, as the temps have risen steadily overnight.

Winterplace: 15 runs and 6 lifts are open until 10pm tonight.

VA resorts open for day and night.

Wintergreen: Sounds like Wintergreen is really hitting their stride this year. “What a great night – we made snow all night long. That means we were able to freshen up the slopes . . . Plus, Highlands opened yesterday, (and) there is plenty of snow depth out there to weather any storm Mother nature throws at us.”

Massanutten: Open until 9pm tonight, but Snow tubing is sold out for today. Massanutten has now built up to 10 lanes of snow tubing, as they keep adding coverage. However, the skiing and riding look good from the top of the mountain, as 6 runs and 5 lifts are open.

Bryce: Open on 7 runs and 3 lifts. Big news is that Night skiing begins! . . .

Windy/Rainy conditions MAY hit Ober . . . but the warm-weather snowmaking prevails

Ober: Open until 10pm tonight on 3 runs and 2 lifts. If you haven’t been there before, here is a nice snowy shot of the aerial tram that takes you up to the resort from downtown Gatlinburg . . . quite a ride:

That’s all for today.

We’d REALLY LOVE IT…if you would:
