It’s seems like someone flipped a switch this morning. The High Country saw several inches of rain over the course of the last 36 hours. With that came flash floods, water covered roads, and more importantly, filled snowmaking reservoirs. The rain has come and gone leaving snow flurries and very cold temperatures in it’s wake. Sugar Mountain remains open with most of the other ski areas in North Carolina set to kick off the season this weekend. A quick survey of local ski areas shows Appalachian, Sugar, Beech, and Cataloochee all have the guns fired up and are making snow for your skiing and riding pleasure. Temperatures across the southeast ski areas are holding below freezing this morning allowing for some serious snowmaking action.

Laura Parquette at Snowshoe Mountain writes “A light snow is falling already this morning, temperatures have been falling since very early this morning, and the snow guns are already working their magic. Our snowmaking team is out right now–at about 7:30–turning on more guns as temperatures and humidity levels have continued to drop throughout the morning. Temperatures will continue to drop as the day goes on, and we have very cold overnight temperatures predicted, which will allow for tons of snowmaking. And the forecast right now looks like it should provide up to 5 days of continuous snowmaking–from this morning right through Sunday. We have some natural snow possible almost every day, with up to 5" of accumulation possible before today is over. All in all the forecast is finally starting to cooperate, and without any drastic changed we’ll open on Dec 10th with great conditions across the mountain. Continue to THINK SNOW!” There you have it folks, Snowshoe will be wide open on Friday, December 10!!

The forecast at Wisp Resort in McHenry, Maryland shows a 100% chance of precipitation with 1 to 3 inches of snow possible!

Wintergreen Resort in Virginia plans to get snowmaking ops fired up gain tonight and hopes the get the season started before their scheduled date of December 10!
