This roller coaster Winter has been ONE WILD RIDE! Friday I skied in what might have been the best powder I have skied in at Ski Beech, Saturday was semi-mild but beautiful and then Sunday was milder still with temps in the 60s here in the mountains of North Carolina. The roller coaster looks to be taking us into MORE COLD and WINTER weather during the week and weekend ahead. Last night I literally had to open the double doors upstairs in my home at 9:30pm last night because it was just too warm up there.

This morning I awake to temps in the 30s…and the forecast of colder and snowier weather this week. If nothing else this winter has been "interesting".

Resort Notes

While we were basking in sunshine here in the mountains of North Carolina…the mountains of Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland were receiving more snow. Here’s a breakdown.

Bryce Resort – Bryce had previously said that they would close on the 13th, however according to sources there, they are "playing it week to week right now" and they expect to ski until AT LEAST this Sunday, March 20th and see from there.

The Homestead – They were also looking at closing yesterday, however they are now closed for THIS WEEK…but plan to reopen on Friday for the weekend and presumably close Sunday, MArch 20th for the 2004-2005 season.

Wintergreen Resort – They reported 5" of new snow on Sunday. Amazing! While the North Carolina mountains were basking in 60+° sunshine, these guys were receiving 5" of snow. What a strange winter…but the conditions at Wintergreen are in one word – AMAZING!

Snowshoe Resort – Through the first two weeks of the month, Mother Nature has dropped 68" of snow on the slopes. Mild temperatures during the day with plenty of sunshine and great snow conditions, what more do you need to know that spring skiing and riding is awesome right now at Snowshoe Mountain.

Massanutten – Also received 2" of new snow on Sunday

Hawksnest call it quits for the season. – Here’s a direct quote from the owners at the popular mountain, "Well, after a roller coaster season we have decided to close for the 04/05 season. After getting the majority of our snow in March, the warm weather off the mountain has kept skier/boarders enjoying warm weather activities."

So Hawksnest joins Wolf Laurel and Sapphire Valley as ski areas that have called it quits for 2004-2005.

Cataloochee – The Cat is closed during this week…but will reopen for one more weekend Friday, Saturday and Sunday. They plan to DAY SKI ONLY and there will be no more Tubing…but if you want to make a turn or two more at Cataloochee…you only have three days left this weekend.

Ski Beech – MONDAY’S ARE LADIES DAY AT SKI BEECH. LADIES SKI FREE TODAY AND CONDITIONS ARE REALLY GREAT UP THERE.

Sugar Mountain – Join Sugar Easter Sunday for their first ever Easter egg hunt on the slopes. More to come later.

We posted a lot of photos last night from this past weekends submissions. Be sure to check out the photos of the day galleries for each resort. We also received quite a few this morning and we’ll be posting those as soon as possible today.
