Monday’s Notes and Comments

Note: Remember we are posting SkiNC.com and SkiSoutheast.com stories as ONE for the remainder of the season.

Yesterday was one beautiful day for the first day of Spring and Monday will almost be a duplicate of it. About the only difference is that Monday will be a little warmer. There is a lot of sunshine out there so pack your sunscreen with you if you’re hitting the slopes. I like what Joe Stevens of Snowshoe Mountain said this morning, "Time to get a tan on your cheeks without getting sand in your shorts." That about sums it up perfectly.

DON’T FORGET THAT YOU CAN SKI FREE ALL DAY TODAY UP AT SKI BEECH!!! – If you are reading this you are burning daylight! Ski Beech is closing up for the season at 4:30pm today and to celebrate a season full of the best discounts in the Southeast, Ski Beech is letting EVERYONE SKI FREE for their last day of the 2004-2005 season.

Gil Adams of Ski Beech wanted us to pass along this message, "We truly appreciate everyone who visited us over this rollercoaster ride of a season. The weather forecasters had a hard time with it, but finally for the last three weeks, we enjoyed some consistently great ski conditions which included some bona fide powder days. We were proud to be able to offer some super specials to create some very affordable skiing, and we were glad to see folks able to take advantage of our specials. We hope that you will return to visit again next season. Thanks again for being with us this winter."

MORE RESORTS ARE CLOSED TODAY

Cataloochee Resort in Maggie Valley, North Carolina closed yesterday at 4:30pm for the season. They had extended their season for one more weekend and by all accounts it was a great one over there. We have a few photos that were sent to us and we’ll try to get those up today.

Bryce Resort in Virginia ceased ski operations for the 2004-2005 season yesterday. If you are looking for a little GOLF they’ve got you covered!

Massunutten Resort in Virginia is closed for this week but WILL reopen for Friday, Saturday and Sunday skiing. If you’re into TUBING, they ARE OPEN DAILY for tubing this week.

THERE’S PLENTY OF GOOD SKIING AND FUN LEFT!!!

We received many emails and messageboard postings from you guys wanting to see the resorts extend their season. A couple of resorts have extended their seasons a bit and those that are open have VERY NICE conditions. The snow will be very Spring Like in the sense that it will be soft and wet (no funny email replies please!) but there is LOTS of snow and great coverage from top to bottom and side to side. Only a couple of resorts are reporting ANY thin coverage areas at all so…this particular Spring Skiing Season will be a great one.

We’ll have to dodge a few chances for showers this week but all in all it should be a decent week ahead. The best days for skiing in the North Carolina mountains will be TODAY and THURSDAY. Today should be beautiful with temps in the mid 50s. Tuesday and Wednesday look a little wet with rain both days. Wednesday’s showers could be the hit and miss type that will allow for some "windows of skiing opportunities". Sugar and Appalachian will have plenty of snow and great coverage.

This Easter Weekend doesn’t look good right now. (Don’t shoot the messenger!) This could change so keep checking back, but for now pretty much all of the forecasters are calling for a showering (very Springlike) Easter weekend Saturday and Sunday with temperatures in the 60s and rainy both days. That will make for a very wet "Meltdown Games" at Appalachian but HEY that should make the water fun even more fun. We know of a lot of people that are having a "mini SkiNC Summit" over at App this weekend. Visit the messageboard and make plans to join in their fun!

The forecast looks rather "showery" into North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia for this week and weekend. It will be a typcially Spring-like week ahead with plenty of bursts of sunshine and about 20-30-40% chance of light rain throughout the region. Of course that means that it’s a 60-70% chance that there won’t be any rain.

Snowshoe Resort – Thanks to 68" of snow in March, Snowshoe Mountain is extending the season an extra week, staying open until April 10!

As we also announced over the last few days, if you have a season pass with another resort in the region, you are in luck at Snowshoe Mountain for the last three weeks of the season. If you book two nights of lodging from March 20 through the end of the season, you will get your lift tickets for free. The free tickets are just for the pass holders. So don’t give up as other resorts in the region begin to close. Snowshoe Mountain will be open through Sunday, April 10.

If you are planning something to do for this weekend, Snowshoe wants you to know about the annual Beach Music Festival. Get your shaggin’ shoes ready for this coming weekend for the annual Beach Music Festival at the Snowshoe Area. Time to get a tan on your cheeks without getting sand in your shorts. Check out the events page at www.SnowshoeMtn.com to find out what’s going on during the exciting weekend.

Since the Silver Creek area is closed for skiing and riding, the Adventure Department has decided to use all of the snow for daytime snowmobile trips and rides. For more information call 304-572-5477.

Get out and SKI!!!
