Christmas Eve was a mild and rather wet one. I was at Sugar Mountain around 2pm and it was 58° with a steady rain. Earlier and later in the day it was alternating between perfectly blue skies, cloudy, rainy…you name it. I was an odd one to say the least. Last night was just raw – with a chilly rain. Some of the mountaintops saw 1/2″ of rain according to several weather stations around the area.
It is wet out this morning but things should improve somewhat as we go through Christmas Day.
Skiing and Riding will be a little different for today as only Snowshoe and Winterplace operate on a normal schedule with day and night sessions. The rest of the ski resorts are either offering day sessions only or varying schedules. We list those for your convenience today and also in the order ranked by number of slopes open.
Snowshoe Mountain – 39° – 41 of 57 trails open. Snow Tubing, Terrain Parks Open.
Winterplace Resort – 45° – 22 of 27 trails open. Snow Tubing open. Open for day and night sessions.
Canaan Valley – 36° – 17 of 47 trails open. Snow tubing, terrain park and ice skating all open. Resort is operating from 9am-4:30pm.
Wisp Resort – 37° – 16 of 34 trails open. Snow tubing, terrain parks, ice skating and mountain coaster open. Day sessions only.
Wintergreen Resort – 39° – 13 of 24 trails open. Terrain Park and Snow Tubing Open. Opens 10am-9pm.
Appalachian Ski Mtn – 51°- 10 of 12 trails open. Terrain Parks & Ice Skating Open. Opens 1pm today til 10pm.
Cataloochee Ski Area – 52.2° – 9 of 18 trails open. Tubing Open. Opens from 1pm-10pm.
Beech Mountain – 50° – 9 of 15 trails open. Snow Tubing, Terrain Park & Ice Skating Open. Opens 1pm today til 10pm.
Sugar Mountain – 48.2° – 9 of 21 trails open. Snow Tubing & Ice Skating Open. Opens Christmas Day at noon to 10pm.
Bryce Resort – 31.5° and light snow! 7 of 8 trails open. Snow Tubing Open. Opens today from 11am-7pm.
Massanutten Resort – 38.3° – 7 of 14 trails open and snow tubing. Opens noon til 8pm.
Ober Gatlinburg – 55.4° – 4 of 10 trails open. Snow Tubing & Ice Skating Open. Opens Christmas Day at noon.
Wolf Ridge – 53.2° – Closed Christmas Day.
Timberline Resort – 39° – 11 of 39 trails open. No report updated today.
Sapphire Valley – No Report
Omni Homestead – No Report
My clan had our early morning Christmas gift opening and we’ll be headed out to visit with family. It’s a busy day for us as we’ll head back later in the afternoon, tear down all the Christmas decorations, pack up for our Snowshoe Mountain getaway and we’ll head out before dawn on Monday.
We’ll provide some updates tonight and have a closer look at the cold and snow that looks to be coming in around mid-week.
