The big news today is the season opening of Timberline Resort in West Virginia.  Timberline is the last WV resort to open and with the reopening of Winterplace tomorrow means that all of the West Virginia Ski Resorts will be up and running.

Timberline is opening with 13 runs and a 14-39” base, along with about 2” of natural snow in the past 24 hours.  They have also been laying down their own snow providing a real treat for their first day guests. ENJOY!

Around the horn this morning shows us that all of the area resorts took advantage of the cold yesterday and last night.  Appalachian Ski Mountain’s base improved by 2-4”, Sugar and Cataloochee added about 4” each, Beech and Wisp both are reporting a whopping 6” of additional, mainly manmade snow, and rounding out the list is Ober Gatlinburg who is +2”.

The resorts are starting to recover from the warm, wet spell we went through and are getting their confidence back to blow snow on some new terrain as well.  Wintergreen is one of those expanding their operations with night skiing starting tomorrow (Friday).  They will also open up the Highlands on Saturday as well as Tubing.  While we’re at it, tomorrow is the last day for 30% off lift tickets.  Starting Saturday, Wintergreen will still be offering an early season discount of 20% until December 20th.

Not to be left out, Canaan Valley will open their tubing park on Saturday as well with sessions starting at 9:00, 11:30, & 2:00 daily.

This is shaping up to be a fine weekend for hitting the slopes, and a weekend that promises that you will not be bored.  Cataloochee is hosting a free rail jam tomorrow night and their first ever ski and board swap this weekend.  SugarFest is this weekend at Sugar Mountain and to help you plan I’ve included the schedule of events at the bottom of the page – you can get full details at Sugar.

Snowshoe Demo Days
Demo Days at Snowshoe, WV

Snowshoe has a full dance card this weekend that you will not want to miss if you can help it at all.  First on tap is Demo Days on Saturday and Sunday.  On Saturday, Snowshoe is having their first terrain park event of the season with the Picnic in the Park Rail Jam.  Registration is open and they are offering $30 lift tickets for all contestants.  Here’s the promo for last year’s event.

It is going to be a great day to be outside and on the slopes today.  It’s a bit cold this morning with highs topping out in the low 40’s at Ober and 17 at Wisp.  Looks like you can expect some wind today blowing clouds by, but for the most part you will see blue skies as you look up.
