Hope You Enjoyed the Early Spring

I hope you guys got out and enjoyed the spring skiing sneak peek this weekend.  And WOW, what a weekend it was.  Beech had their 80’s Retro Weekend, which we crashed on Saturday.  Wintergreen had their Freestyle Double Cross, Snowshoe hosted the West Virginia Open, and Ober had a Big Air contest yesterday.  I can’t say this enough – it was a GREAT weekend at the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic ski resorts!

But that was then and this is now, and it appears that winter is going to make its return this week.  The temperatures this morning are much cooler than mornings past.  In fact, winter is far from gone up in West Virginia and Maryland where they received a blanket of snow overnight.

Snowfalls:
Canaan Valley Resort: 1”
Snowshoe Resort: 1”
Timberline Resort:2”
Wisp Resort: 3”

When it comes to Canaan and Timberline I like to keep them close, given their vicinity to one another, but we’ve all seen storms that drop an inch in one place and a few miles drive down the road, on the other side of the ridge perhaps, you’ll see 2” or more.  So it is what it is.  I like to let them state their snowfalls and then I confirm it with http://data.canaanmtnsnow.com/.  Well, you have the reports from Canaan and Timberline above, but the check site says they received 4” of snowfall in the past 24 hours.  I’m not sure where that went, but I’m pretty comfortable with the resort numbers this morning.

Canaan Valley Resort definitely got some snow, but it doesn’t look like 4” to me.  Their 1” report seems pretty right on.

Timberline also got some snow, but if you look at the picnic tables, it appears they received more than Canaan Valley Resort.  Looks like there is about 2” there – so Timberline seem to be right on this morning as well.

A Couple Inches of Snow at Timberline

Down here in North Carolina, you can expect blue skies today with a few clouds at the higher elevations.

If you’re up at Sugar or Beech this morning, you might say I’m crazy, but the low clouds should burn off a little later this morning.  I would typically show you a picture of Sugar or Beech right now, but I think you’ve all seen a socked in mountain before.

So, winter is not done with us yet and looking ahead, it appears that Maryland, West Virginia, and Virginia can expect snow to start on Tuesday.  While down here in North Carolina, we’ll have to wait until Wednesday.  There are no National Weather Service Alerts yet (except for the Pollen Alert at Appalachian), but we will keep an eye out for those and let you know as soon as we do for sure!

Before I go this morning – did you guys know we’re doing a Summit up at Snowshoe this weekend?  Take a look at the message boards for details and to see who is going so far.  If you have any questions, please drop me an email.

LADIES – It is Ladies Night at Ober this evening with Free 6 to 10 PM lift tickets for ladies of all ages with 10 canned goods benefiting Sevier County Food Ministries.  There's also the Ladie's Night in the Park where you can learn about freestyle riding from a female coach in a stress free environment – away from THOSE boys.

Take care out there today!
