Goodbye (or Good Riddance) February

As we depart February and turn to March it’s a good time to reflect on the month past. I think the general consensus is that the weather in February under-performed a little bit, but there were pockets of good snowfall and good temps to sustain solid base depths. February is TYPICALLY the second coldest month of the year, with December being a close third.

Notably, VA had a good storm about 10 days ago. It’s been a little lack-luster in NC and TN lately. WV had a decent month, but is still below average snowfall so far. To that point, David Lesher (Canaan Mountain Snowfall) writes . . .

“For the third consecutive year, there is zero snow on the ground here on the last day of February. Prior to 2017, the three greatest amounts on that date were 20 inches in 2007, 34 inches in 2003 and 41 inches in 2010.”

I think what we need is to flip the ‘ole Calendar and turn to an even better March!

WV does have a good weekend upcoming . . . It COULD begin tonight!

  • Canaan: “After a snow making campaign that lasted the first half of the week, CVR is looking great and back up to 24 trails.”
    • Snow Incoming! . . . “We have a chance for 3-5 INCHES of snow tonight into Friday morning, with an even better chance for accumulating snow on Sunday.
    • Colder temps on the way! . . . “Some of the colder temps of the season look to spill into the area next week, with even more snow in the forecast.”
  • Snowshoe: The SkiSoutheast Summit begins tomorrow! Let’s take a look at the stats and what some of the trails look like (not much is likely to change between now and tomorrow)
    • 59 (of 60) runs open
    • 11 (of 14) lifts open. Typically, Snowshoe ADDS more lift service on the weekends
    • 45″ Base with State-of-the-Art Grooming, along with variable conditions
    • If you are headed up there tonight/tomorrow, use caution as there is a Winter Weather advisory from 9pm, tonight until Noon, tomorrow.

Event will start at 12 noon, and awards will be given in the Annex immediately following the event.”

Ober is ‘staying tough’

  • Ober: “Today we will have 4 runs open:  Upper Bear, Cub Way, Castle and Ski School, open at Noon today!  The base is 15-30″ on our main slopes and the terrain park is located on the Skiers Right of Castle Run. Snow conditions:  Machine Groomed Granular.”
    • Tonight is College Night!  Exchange $10 or 10 canned/non-perishable food items for a night session lift ticket (6pm-10pm).

That’s all for today.
