Today/Tonight is the kick-off to the Presidents’ Weekend celebration at all resorts in the region. It’s a really nice time of the year to brush-off that ‘cabin fever’, as the days are getting noticeably longer and winter’s chill is a little less harsh.

That will hold true today as temps, everywhere, are a little on the ‘mild-side’ (High of 44F at Wisp). This will make for soft snow: good for beginners and those who are trying to ‘uncork’ some new tricks in the terrain parks’.

The cold air begins to swoop-in tonight as WV/MD will see some snow (1-3″ at Snowshoe, 1-2″ in the Canaan area, Winterplace w/ 1″, and a Trace at Wisp). The rest of us have some ‘undeveloped snow’ in the forecast . . . heavy in some places.

Enjoy the weekend . . . It’s been a great season so far!

NC might be a touch rainy, but that doesn’t stop the fun

  • Sapphire Valley: probably the biggest event of the year at Sapphire is happening tomorrow at 11am . . . The Great Outhouse Races!
    • Toward the end of each ski season in the Ski Sapphire Valley Resort we all get a little restless and look for a bit of excitement, so we decided to do what comes naturally…race outhouses on ski’s down a hill!
    • It’s like the bobsled but in a Port-a-John . . . “Crazy? Maybe. Dangerous? Perhaps. Fun? Without a doubt! . . . Homemade outhouses can be made of wood, cardboard, plastic, or any other homemade items. There are three people to a team and outhouses are secured on a set of skis, which can be provided to you by the Sapphire Valley Ski Area. These skis are pushed by two team members, while one team member ‘sits’ inside.”
  • Cataloochee: is “Ready for the Weekend!”
    • “We have said it before – don’t let the forecast worry you.  We have the snow.”
      • Opens at 8:30am (Friday, Saturday, AND Sunday) . . . “Today we are skiing on a 71-105″ base on 16 slopes.”
  • App: 100% open on 12 runs and 6 lifts (w/ 3 Terrain Parks).

    • High Country Weather predicts, “New snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible.”
  • Snowshoe: “Another mild day on the mountain means more soft turns in these spring-like conditions. Conditions will be soft, great for beginners, hitting some features in the park or throwing out fun turns on the trails.”
    • Our snowmakers are watching the forecast closely, and are looking forward to cooperative temperatures.
    • High Country Weather predicts, “New snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.”
  • Winterplace: Open on 25 runs and 5 lifts on a 30-54″ Granular, Loose Granular, and Variable base.

  • Timberline: Open on 5 runs and 1 lift from 9am TO 9pm.
