This just in — Snowshoe Resort has made SkiSoutheast.com the first to know that they are extending their ski season to April 10th. Almost FIVE FEET of natural snow and near record late-season visitors have prompted the mountain to prolong their season (weather permitting of course).
More on that later…and thanks to Joe Stevens for giving us the scoop!
Snowing heavy in North Carolina tonight!!!
Man oh Man was it snowing on Friday night!!! About 4-5" of snow has fallen as of this report (11pm) and the powder up at Ski Beech was amazing. Most of the trails at Beech were covered in anywhere from 4" to 8" OF fresh new powder. It was without question, the best powder conditions of the season. Some of the earlier snowfalls have dropped more snow…but it was of a different consistency. This was some sweet snow. The snow fell consistently hard most all night and the few people that braved the weather were treated to phenomenal conditions and no snowguns other than what God was pouring on us!
Our group of ten had a ball. The roads had begun to get covered on our drive up Beech Mountain Parkway…and by the time we left the mountain to head back home…it was covered with 4" of snowfall. There were a few vehicle mishaps, but not too bad. About the time we hit Lees McCrae the roads cleared considerably and the snow depths were considerably less as well (maybe 2"). MORE snow is on the way and conditions should be wonderful on Saturday.
We have to give a shout out to On-Snow Reporter, Austin Beeghly from Orlando. Austin spent his Friday skiing at Sugar Mountain and he’ll report on that later…but we met up at 5:30pm and headed up to Beech for some night skiing and were rewarded with what Austin agreed was the best conditions of the season…and it’s March 11th!!!!
The winds were howling up top but once you got 50 yards off the top it was simply phenomenal!
By the way…young Austin had told me that he was a tall young fellow…but he failed to mentioned that he was 7 feet tall and I’m telling you he was a pretty good skier for such a tall guy. More from him a little later. I’ll update the snow totals early AM Saturday! See you then!
