Dave McConnell Raves a Bit, Now that Old Man Winter is here… Finally!

First Trax

Finally, winter has returned to us. The forecasts look good for the foreseeable future and all the ski resorts are opening up more terrain every day. I don’t know about you, but I’ve been in a pretty crappy mood since about Thanksgiving. Listening to everyone talk about the beautiful weather while watching all the snow melt at the ski resorts and the terrain scale back to bare bones tends to grate against me. Now it’s my turn to laugh though, once the temperature returned to normal those same people are now dressed like we live in the Arctic Circle and looking up airfares to Florida.

I’ve been out a couple of times and skied while getting blasted by the snow making and actually enjoyed getting blasted by the snowmaking. Winter seems to be here again. This weekend should see opening up of more advanced terrain, finally; I might add. With the return of the weather comes the return of all the skiers to the slopes, not the folks riding the church buses from all over the South; the real skiers. The skiers that get out for a day or night session whenever they can, the ones that have already been out on a few occasions this season just to satisfy that yearning for the feel of the snow beneath their boots. The ones that have been unfulfilled by constant lapping of the one intermediate run that was open at whichever resort they were riding.

Don’t get me wrong, I am very thankful and appreciative of the efforts that the ski resorts have put into just staying open the past several weeks. In fact rather than complaining about conditions I applaud the ski areas for keeping slopes open when they would have closed them in more normal years. But let’s be real, it’s just not the same when the resorts are only open to midstation and the most challenging runs open are easy blue slopes.

Our season is now upon us. No holiday weekend crowds for a few weeks and the slopes are shaping up just in time to save us from the “winter that wasn’t”. The ski resorts should be opening up new terrain almost daily and that means that we shouldn’t be far away from whatever your favorite slope is opening. So it’s time to get out there and ski it now.

See you on the slopes.

David
