Cross Country Skiing and Snowshoeing in Tennessee

It's 45 minutes from Boone, but Roan Mountain is the place for serious skiers. Roan's evergreen covered summits are a scene straight out of the far north. The summertime road to the summit is gated and gradual terrain beckons skiers up to distant views of Mount Mitchell and surrounding peaks. Trails flank the road, including the Appalachian Trail and its wild descent back to your car. There are beginner options.
