We began hearing first from Cataloochee Ski Area and then Appalachian and Sugar Mountain all reported that they would be closing today due to the heavy rains that have entered the area. Normally heavy rain is bad news, but not on this particular day as those rains will help extinguish the dozens of wildfires that have been plaguing the region over the last 2-3 weeks.

Late on Monday evening one of those wildfires exploding into a raging inferno that HAS destroyed numerous homes and businesses in the Gatlinburg, Tennessee area. See that story here.

Thankfully Ober Gatlinburg Ski Area is safe and was not damaged in those fires (even reports to the contrary were being tossed around by national and regional news sources. Our thoughts and prayers are with those people who are being affected by those wildfires.

As mentioned, we are thankful for the moderate-to-heavy rain that is now hitting all of the ski area communities within our coverage area. First, we could use a little rain as we’ve been in a significant drought for a couple of months now. Second – as mentioned, these rains will be a great help to the firefighters who are working to fully contain those fires across the region. (We are already hearing from some sources that some of the fires are already OUT but being monitored.)

SNOWSHOE & BEECH ARE OPEN…

As mentioned earlier, Cataloochee, App and Sugar decided to close ski ops for a couple of days. Check the SNOW REPORT for those details as they are reopening at different times throughout the weekend.

However TODAY, there IS STILL skiing and snowboarding happening if you want to fight a bit of rain at Beech Mountain Ski Resort in Beech Mountain, North Carolina AND at Snowshoe Resort in Snowshoe, West Virginia.

Our buddy, Shawn Cassell posted, “A little rain doesn’t have to dampen your day as long as you have the right gear – So grab a poncho and get out there and enjoy those soft turns! Cold air is due to return just in time to give everything a refresher before the weekend.

Progression Park is open with 6 features and 1 jump.

Ski as many days as you want between now and Christmas for only $99 with our Early Season Pass! For more info, visit our Deals & Packages page at snowshoemtn.com.”

As the man said – GO PLAY.
