The weekend after New Year’s is typically slow, and each year Beech Mountain Resort fills the void with Winterfest, a two-day festival featuring the Bathing Beauty Competition, the Great Cardboard Box Derby and other winter activities. The event takes place on Saturday and Sunday, January 7 and 8.

“It really is a fun-filled weekend. You don’t have to ski or snowboard to come and celebrate the winter season with Beech Mountain,” said Talia Freeman, director of marketing at Beech Mountain Resort.

The Nesquik Bathing Beauty competition kicks off Winterfest at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday as men and women ski or snowboard down the Play Yard Slope in their skimpy beach attire. Contestants are judged on beauty, poise, outrageousness and originality. Registration takes place from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m., a $10 registration fee is required and prizes are awarded to the top three contestants.

A new addition to Beech Mountain Resort is the Roots Ride Shop, the ski and snowboard merchandise shop that will host a grand opening during Winterfest, as well as sponsorthe Roots Rail Jam, a spectator-friendly event held on Saturday that features both ski and snowboard categories. Competitors will vie for the first-place prize of $1,000 in credit from the Roots Ride Shop. No entry fee is required to compete in this event that starts at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday in the heart of Beech Tree Village.

After the Roots Rail Jam, the awards ceremony takes place at Beech Tree Bar & Grille, and Teton Gravity Research will premiere One for the Road, a ski and snowboard film. Live music follows the event from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m.

The most popular event at Winterfest is the Great Cardboard Box Derby, where contestants make their sleds out of cardboard, tape and glue. In past competitions, designs have included the woolly worm, SpongeBob SquarePants, the Star Trek Enterprise, monster alligators and a coffin.

The judging for the appearance of the Great Cardboard Box Derby starts at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday and registration, which includes a $25 fee, takes place from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the Administration Building. Racers must be 18 years or older to compete. Originality, appearance and speed are the three prize divisions, and at 2:30 p.m., the race begins.

Other Winterfest activities include the Slopestyle Competition, the Roots Ride Shop Fashion Show and ice sculpting and figure skating demonstrations. The Roots Ride Shop will feature sales and demos on apparel and equipment all weekend long.
