Beech Mountain Resort, Cataloochee Ski Area and Sugar Mountain Resort are open today. Sugar is open tonight. That’s it for open ski areas.

2015-Dec-05-appAppalachian Ski Mountain was hoping to be open today, and the mountain looks pretty decent after snowmaking that took place Thursday night into Friday morning, but the temperatures just hovered slightly and frustratingly above what was needed and they didn’t make snow last night and were not able to open.

We saw lots of snowmaking happening still this morning at Cataloochee, Sugar and Beech Mountain and they will make snow as long as temps allow, but temperatures are forecasted to reach into the mid 40s across the mountain tops today.

Snowshoe was making snow at the base but not up top this morning. It looks pretty awesome huh?

Snowshoe Mountain and Timberline Resort were both making snow this morning. Snowshoe’s temps looked like it was allowing snowmaking at the base but not up top. Timberline is hoping to make enough snow to get open next weekend and there’s no word just yet as to when Snowshoe will open. They certainly look like they could push some of those huge mounds around and open, but they tend to hold off until they can open more terrain. It will be interesting over the next week or two as this isn’t a typical December weather pattern so we may see Snowshoe do something unusual over the next week and open with limited terrain.

Notes of interest for today. We’re now including Oglebay Resort in Wheeling, West Virginia on our snow report. Don’t get too excited if you haven’t heard of Oglebay. They are more of a resort that just happens to offer one slope and one lift. We’ve added them to our snow report simply because we provide the snow reporting for a few ski shops and the West Virginia Department of Tourism and they needed it. So it’s now there.

If you’re touring the Ski Webcams you’ll note that Wolf Ridge’s LIVE cam went operational last night.

We also just shipped a new LIVE webcam to Wisp Resort in Maryland. They will start with one camera on top of their hotel at the base of the mountain. We’re excited to show those of you who have not visited Wisp before. You really need to pay them a visit. Garrett County is an adventure lover’s haven and Deep Creek Lake is simply beautiful.

Check the SNOW REPORT for all of the details, but to quickly summarize we have:

Beech Mountain – open with 5 slopes for day sessions.
Cataloochee – open with 5 slopes for day sessions.
Sugar – open with 4 slopes for day and night sessions.

Appalachian and Sugar offer ice skating.

Cataloochee Ski Area – Saturday and Sunday marks Cat’s 3rd Annual Cataloochee Ski & Snowboard Swap at the area.  Sign up to bring your gently used winter clothing and used hardgoods to sell on both Saturday and Sunday, or shop for the best deals of the season on used equipment.  For more information, visit their website at www.cataloochee.com/swap.

Also Sunday, December 6, is Can-U-Ski Food and Coat Drive for Haywood Christian Ministries.  24 cans of food or 2 winter jackets of any kind will get you your lift ticket on Sunday for free, it’s a $65 value.  Cans and coats should be dropped off at either the Ghost Town parking lot at the bottom of the hill or at Cataloochee Ski & Sports and you will receive your lift ticket there. Those persons needing to rent equipment and get lessons will pay for those items at the ski area when they show their lift ticket.

Wolf Ridge Resort – 34° and they made snow Thursday night but just can’t catch a break. They LIVE CAM is operating now and we spoke with Charles Stancil last night and they’re just waiting on some consistently cold temps to get open. Check out the camera at http://www.resortcams.com/webcams/wolf-ridge-base/
