Outdoor enthusiast, skier, snowboarder and telemark skier. Yes, I like to mix it up. While at the University of Colorado, Boulder I became an alternate athlete on the National Championship Ski team. I have had a passion for snow sports my whole life, and that fire continues to burn bright. I spent six years as an instructor at Hidden Valley ski area and loved sharing the gift of skiing and snowboarding with others.Since moving to Western NC I average about 30 days per year at the local mountains and I'm excited about being a part of the SkiSoutheast team.

A Tepid Day on Tap

Yesterday, I made it out for a quick 'triple-threat' (tele, ski, and ride) at Cataloochee. It's the time of the year, where I enjoy 'keeping it interesting' and getting some late season laps on all 3 fun machines. What I've discovered is that the order...

Cold Nights and Warm Days

We really get the best of both worlds early this week, as temps dipped below freezing last night. This should help the snow 'set-up' well for some crisp turns and some of the best grooming conditions since mid-last week. Couple that with warm days, and...

(Still) Good Days to Be Had

The photo above was taken last week, and is courtesy of Justin Harris at Canaan Valley Resort. He writes . . . "I like the perspective of our mountain on a cold winter day with the frozen tributary of the Blackwater (river) in the foreground....

(Rare) March Powder Day, Today!

I figure if you are a reader of SkiSoutheast.com, I am guessing that you probably don't want winter to end just yet. In years past, we have sometimes been a little 'cheated' by end of season conditions. Rest assured, that is not the case...

It’s “Almost Heaven” throughout the region

I am beginning to sound like a broken record in regards to how good the conditions are. But let's look at the facts, by Friday night, parts of West Virginia could see a WEEK STRAIGHT of significant snow accumulation. Canaan bridged the gap in the...

March COULD BE the best month of the season

March continues to deliver as we are now one week into the month. You could easily make the case that we are seeing some of the best conditions of the year, nearly everywhere. AND, the forecast is turning more favorable vs. less than ideal.Last...

A Mardi Gras, March, Miracle Day!

We 'fumbled the ball' a little bit yesterday, but we are back in action today . . . And Boy, what . . . a . . . Day!There is a lot to catch up on, AND that is going to be the theme of the...

March comes ‘in like a Lion’

It's certainly not coming 'in like a lamb', as we turn the page to March. Overnight, the forecast held correct as Wisp and Canaan saw 3", respectively. Wisp is reporting a PACKED POWDER / Groomed base, which is definitely good conditions. Even Oglebay saw 2" as...

Goodbye (or Good Riddance) February

As we depart February and turn to March it's a good time to reflect on the month past. I think the general consensus is that the weather in February under-performed a little bit, but there were pockets of good snowfall and good temps to...

Surf ‘n Turf!

This is certainly beginning to be the time of the year where you can Ski/Ride in the morning AND another outdoor pursuit in the afternooon! . . . or Vice-a-VersaOvernight felt like a 'house divided' as temps in VA/MD were unseasonably cold overnight (low to...
