Outdoor enthusiast, skier, snowboarder and telemark skier. Yes, I like to mix it up. While at the University of Colorado, Boulder I became an alternate athlete on the National Championship Ski team. I have had a passion for snow sports my whole life, and that fire continues to burn bright. I spent six years as an instructor at Hidden Valley ski area and loved sharing the gift of skiing and snowboarding with others.Since moving to Western NC I average about 30 days per year at the local mountains and I'm excited about being a part of the SkiSoutheast team.

Kick-start your Holiday weekend EARLY

Ok, so I have a confession to make . . . I am not a meterologist, but Brad Panovich is! I might have been a little too amped/overzealous about yesterday's forecasted snowfall amounts. I guess, sometimes, we all get it a little wrong. Hey,...

Snow alert! . . . (later) Today AND Tonight

Today begins with "All is quiet on the Western Front", but that is not quite how it will end. According to High Country Weather, Wisp is forecasted to be the big winner with 4-7", total, by this time tomorrow! They are followed by Canaan/Timberline...

Snowmaking all around

The cold air has really settled in, and we are seeing temperatures that should reflect typical January numbers. No real temperature inversions to speak of, which is the sign of high (cold) pressure throughout the region. That being said, we are going to have...

From Snow in the Smokies to a Bluebird Day in VA

Last night we saw a bit of snow fall on the NC/TN state line . . . basically along the Appalachian Trail. That tends to happen when we get a little 'Northwest Flow event'. Even if it doesn't always bring in much snow, it...

Leftovers are fine by me

This weekend was quite nice. I made it to a medley of the NC resorts from Friday to Sunday. Depending on where you live, one of the perks of living in Western North Carolina is that there are 7 resorts within a 2 hour...

Get ready for Round 2!

The last 50+ hours we have see the resorts transform themselves into Winter Wonderlands once again. It really goes to show how much we are at the mercy of mother nature. From, resorts doubling their base depths (Appalachian Ski Mountain) to nearly a foot...

Almost a blizzard!

The National Weather Service defines a blizzard as "a severe snowstorm characterized by strong sustained winds of at least 35 mph (56 km/h) and lasting for a prolonged period of time—typically three hours or more." At 7pm last night, on top of Snowshoe mountain, there was...

Winter is here! . . . with Vengeance

It's here . . . the long awaited cold front came in with 'vengeance' last night, to the point that I was woken up last night from the kicking winds. It's the kind of cold you can feel in your bones, especially after we...

The anticipation is growing

Unless you have been living underneath a rock (of which I have been guilty of in the past), you might have heard that cold weather is on it's way! This is a much needed injection to the resorts, that couldn't be happening at a...

Something to look forward to

The cold air returns very soon (as early as Tuesday evening) and we will have a LENGTHY period of prime snowmaking conditions. I hate to use the word prime because there is one hitch . . . WIND! The wind gusts look to get...
