Outdoor enthusiast, skier, snowboarder and telemark skier. Yes, I like to mix it up. While at the University of Colorado, Boulder I became an alternate athlete on the National Championship Ski team. I have had a passion for snow sports my whole life, and that fire continues to burn bright. I spent six years as an instructor at Hidden Valley ski area and loved sharing the gift of skiing and snowboarding with others.Since moving to Western NC I average about 30 days per year at the local mountains and I'm excited about being a part of the SkiSoutheast team.

The Spring Skiing only Continues to get Better

All but one of the resorts have announced their closing date of Sunday, March 31st. As Mike wrote yesterday, "We are only GUESSING that Cataloochee will close after day sessions on Sunday, and unless they extend the season a couple more days, that will...

Mid-week weather is ‘Money’ this week

Well, we didn't see any snow last night, but we did see temps get down below freezing at 2 (of 3) open resorts. Snowshoe got down to 27F, but couldn't quite groom a couple of their runs because of the sog. Wisp hit 26F...

We COULD see a ‘wintry mix’ in the final week

As we enter the last week of the season, we MIGHT even see snow at some of the resorts in the Southeast, although don't get your hopes too high as 'little or no accumulation is expected'. The places that might see some flakes include:Wisp:...

Spring Snow – Round 1

The Northwest Flow Storm is moving right along, as predicted. Yesterday/Overnight, the 5000 foot peaks in NC received around an inch, which put Beech and Cat in that category.Perhaps the bigger news was the (unexpected) accumulation at Wintergreen overnight (snow total still pending). On...

Snow Totals are Trending Upwards for the Next 36 hours!

Here is the latest special weather statement released by the NWS (which applies to Beech, Cataloochee, and App): ...accumulating northwest flow snowfall possible across higher elevations late this afternoon through tonight... A compact but cold upper level low and associated cold front will support snow showers...

Spring has arrived with Snow in the Forecast

It's pretty cool that you can be a 3 season skier/rider here in the southeast (i.e. skiing/riding before December 21st, between December 21st and March 19th, and March 20th and beyond). In fact, I can't even remember the last year that you couldn't "Ski...

A cold start for this final day of Winter

Well, technically spring doesn't start until 5:58pm tomorrow. But today is the last FULL day of winter and what a cold start it is. Everyone was in the teens or 20's this morning with one resort making snow last night . . . Appalachian...

Snow Today for some, Sunshine for others

Hard to believe that the Vernal Equinox is just 2 days away, and with it, the start of spring. It has been snowing this morning at Wisp (above photo), where it looks like they will see 'light snow' throughout the day. Snowshoe may see some...

Temperatures plummet throughout the day

I'll let you in on one of the secrets to this years success. On, or just prior to, MOST weekends (with some exceptions) we have had good weather, in the form of snow making temps and/or some natural snow fall. This is a 'win-win'...

Warm Today . . . Big Chill arrives Tomorrow!

With the forecast looking unseasonably cold this weekend INTO early next week, the general vibe is that resorts are 'seeing the window stay open' toward extending their seasons. The nice part about this upcoming cold front is that all the open resorts will feel the 'chill'.Keep...
