David McCue grew up in Amarillo, Texas and annoyed the natives of New Mexico and Colorado by skiing on their mountains throughout his childhood and teens. He put down his neon 200cm GS skis for nearly twenty years until the fateful day he took his own young sons for a half day to Cataloochee. He has never looked back, except when alone and deep in the trees. A carpenter by trade, the uncertainties of the housing market have further honed David’s snow skills. He now resides with his patient wife on the banks of the Haw River in central North Carolina and annoys the natives of West Virginia by skiing on their mountains.

Words and pictures by David McCueI closed out my season yesterday.  Those are six words I hate to type.  I won't dwell right now on the painful fact that I have skied my last day of the 2017-18 season; I will weep quietly on my...

The SkiSE Snowshoe Summit Reclaims Winter Again

Story and pictures by David McCueThis is not the first time this has happened. In seasons past as February was winding down and conditions began to look questionable for the Ski Southeast Summit, held now annually at Snowshoe the first weekend in March,  a...

Red Mountain, Whitewater and Schweitzer.  Words and pictures by David McCueAs March draws near with Spring Break dates looming and a deep desire building to find fresh snow before the season ends, many of us are turning our gaze further west.  If you squint...

With Six Weeks of Separation, Two Great Days at Wintergreen

Words and pictures by David McCue.I just returned from my third outing of the year skiing at Wintergreen in Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains.  I wrote a little about the opening weekend in a previous post; that always has a special flavor as  the season...

A Deep Dive Into Packing

Words and Pictures by David McCue So much of skiing has  a ritualistic aspect to it, and unless you are fortunate enough to live in the immediate vicinity of skiable mountains (if that's you, don't gloat,) travel is literally the constant rite of passage surrounding...

Canaan Valley and the Roots of Southern Skiing

Words and Photos by David McCueThe Canaan Valley in West Virginia may have the best but least known skiing in the southeast. Hiding in plain sight above the highest mountain valley in the eastern United States you have Wiess and Bald Knob atop Cabin...

Hey Timberline, Happy to see you again

Pictures and Story by David McCueIt had been a little bit since I skied at Timberline, great to be back again. I guess I'm a homer (away from home) for the Canaan Valley, I'll leave central North Carolina at silly early and return crazy...
