August 11th – Pretty Foggy Early

We’re on a good pattern of foggy mornings that would indicate a snowy winter if this bit of weatherlore can be counted on. I am enjoying a couple of days in the Smokies and updating remotely by way of getting texts from Valle Crucis and Elizabethton…and virtually by way of our many webcams in the region.

I noticed really clear and sunny conditions early this morning around Sweergrass and also via the Downtown, Blowing Rock cameras. It was clear at Banner Elk as well. The cameras over at Watauga Lake (where I would normally be on a Saturday morning) were a bit cloud laden.

It is meant to be sunny or at least Partly Cloudy and 84 degrees here at poolside in Gatlinburg today so the warmer-than-normal trend continues. It’s forecasted to be 87 degrees even at Myrtle Beach today. That is another bit of weatherlore – If the first week of August is unusually warm, the coming winter will be snowy and long.

We can hope…

Here is the morning by morning report:

Totals: 8 for 11 (and only sharing the latest dailies)
Aug 11:Very foggy from atop Echota, near Foscoe and Seven Devils
Aug 10:Our Matt Laws said that it was very foggy pretty much for his entire trip in this morning.
Aug 9: Pretty foggy/
Aug 8: Light fog on the drive over from Elk River to Sugar and down 105

If you are into bears (as most of us mountain folk are), check out the bears we witnessed at our motel Friday afternoon and evening.

Until tomorrow… email me at [email protected]
