Last Day and Snow

There are a couple bonus days next weekend, Saturday at Wintergreen and Saturday and Sunday at Snowshoe, but for the most part – today is the final day of the 2013/14 ski season!  WOW – what a year we’ve had!!  It just seems fitting that on this last day of this spectacular season we’re talking fresh snow.  Here are the past 24 hour snowfalls at the currently operating resorts.

24 hr Snowfall Totals:

Sugar Mountain: 2” and snowing
Massanutten: Snowing
The Homestead: Snowing
Wintergreen: ½” and snowing
Snowshoe Resort: 3” and snowing
Timberline Resort: 2.8” and snowing
Wisp Resort: 1.8” and snowing

What a way to go!  Packing on a little more before it’s all said and done – I hear ya!

We even have some Winter Weather Advisories for you.  Sugar Mountain has a Winter Weather Advisory until noon today calling for up to 6 inches of snow!  Snowshoe and Timberline’s Advisories go until 2pm this afternoon with 3-6” at Snowshoe and 2-4” at Timberline.  The Homestead has an Advisory until 4pm today with 1-4” of fresh snow possible.  And finally, our most northern member resort, Wisp in Maryland, has an Advisory until 2pm today with 2-4” of snow expected.

Indeed, taking a look at the resort cams this morning shows the snow coming down pretty good.  Massanutten looks especially nice with nice big flakes coming down pretty heavy.

This is truly the season that keeps on giving!  It’s crazy, and pretty mind-blowing to be honest, that this is the end of the season.  For all of us, this means taking the sticks to the shop one last time to get the summer coating put on, loosening the bindings to give the springs a break, and lovingly tucking away the boots that have cuddled our feet for all of those hours on the slopes.  For us around here, the transition is even more dramatic and life altering.

Sugar Mountain, in the North Carolina High Country, started our season out on November 13, 2013.  That is 138 days of bringing you the First Trax EVERY morning.  That means every night we go to bed formulating the next day’s post.  That means that if we’re traveling, we need to make sure we have an internet connection and a morning place to work without bothering everyone.  That means that every day for the past 4 months and 18 days our minds have been on you and every action that we have taken in our lives is done around the morning First Trax posting.  And I’ve got to tell you, I wouldn’t trade that for a single thing.  It has truly been my honor to be your primary guide for this season, and I look forward to many more.  Of course, it takes a village and Mike and Kenny have been instrumental in pulling this off.  While I’m not writing our season’s swan song just yet, today does mark the end of the 138 day marathon, if not for just a few days since we HAVE MORE SKIING AND RIDING TO DO NEXT WEEKEND!  Nonetheless, this marks a break in the action and I’m already starting to feel a hole developing.

Get out today while you still can.  There is fresh snow to be had – a magnificent way to end the 2013-2014 ski season – or more correctly, a break in the action.  We will be back on Friday to kick the final weekend off with you.

This week and next, I’ll be putting together our final thoughts on the season and would love to hear from you.  How did your season go?  Was this your first time on the mountain or did  you just find our site?  Did you take your first big skiing/boarding trip this year?  Get new gear or an otherwise breakthrough year?  Tell me about it!

Take Care!
