Happy President’s Day!

02.17.14 08:44 AM

Happy President’s Day everyone.  The government is shutdown today, so might as well hit the slopes.  It has been just a fabulous weekend at the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic resorts.  All of this natural snow we’ve been getting could not have come at a better time.

As you’ll remember, a week or so ago we were talking about a mid-winter thaw and then …. BAM, a couple feet of snow.  It’s a win for the ski resorts and a win for all of you who made it up to the mountains.

Some of our member resorts are still seeing snow.  Here’s the rundown:

Canaan Valley: 4.4”
Snowshoe: 2”
Timberline: 4.4”
Wisp: 2”

Current conditions at Snowshoe Ski Resort.

It’s a little cooler today but you should see blue sky.

Weather Map.

Wisp is our only member resort that has been issued an alert by the weather service.  They are under a Winter Weather Advisory starting at 7pm this evening and going to 1pm tomorrow (Tuesday).  Looks like they can expect another 2-4 inches of snow.  Wisp has been getting dumped on here lately with 35” in the past 72 or so hours!  They’ve received 127” of good ole natural snow so far this season.

Other season snowfall notables:

Canaan Valley: 124.3”
Snowshoe Resort: 124”
Timberline Resort: 120.9”

West Virginia is having another good year!

Sochi Olympics

Team USA is not doing all that well at the Olympics in Sochi.  We are currently 7th in the medals standings with a total of 16 - 4 golds, 4 silvers, and 8 bronzes.  If we hadn’t swept the Men’s Ski Slopestyle, we’d be really hurting!

Medal Counts:

1. Germany: 12 - 7 Gold, 3 Silver, 2 Bronze
2. Netherlands: 17 - 5 Gold, 5 Silver, 7 Bronze
3. Norway: 14 - 5 Gold, 3 Silver, 6 Bronze
4. Switzerland: 7 - 5 Gold, 1 Silver, 1 Bronze
5. Russian Fed: 16 - 4 Gold, 7 Silver, 5 Bronze
6. Canada: 14 - 4 Gold, 6 Silver, 4 Bronze
7. United States: 16 - 4 Gold, 4 Silver, 8 Bronze
8. Poland: 4 - 4 Gold
9. China: 5 - 3 Gold, 2 Silver
10. Belarus: 4 - 3 Gold, 1 Bronze

The biggest disappointment for me, and for a lot of people I imagine, is Bode Miller’s performance.  I was really hoping he would do a little better than he has.  He has only scored one medal at the Olympics – a tie for bronze in the Suger G.  He certainly got our hopes up with his downhill practice runs where he had the fastest time and won 2 of the 3 trials.  If you’ve been keeping up with Bode, you know that he took last year off due to surgery and is the oldest of the group.  In fact with his bronze, he is the oldest Olympian to medal in Alpine - EVER.  This is probably our last chance to see him on this stage.

Back home, there is lots of snow both on the slopes and off, so get out today if you can.
